To ask you to tell me what happened when you stopping smoking?

I've smoked for 30 years but I'm coughing a lot more lately so have decided to try my best to give up on the 1st January. I'm also a runner (started 10years ago) so spend the end of my runs coughing and even cough mid run sometimes. Then I think what the hell am I doing! I'm keeping fit then breathing this filth into my lungs.

I'm pretty much an all or nothing person so think just going cold turkey will be the best option. What can I expect? Will I be grumpy? eat more? Anxious? Was it harder or easier than you thought?
Can you tell me your experiences of stopping please?

I think what will work for me is having a vape which I've just dug out and it's a good one. I also know that having some cigs nearby won't be a temptation if I'm determined enough, I think I'd panic if there wasn't anything there (as daft as it sounds) I've been telling myself all day 'you're not a smoker' while smoking of course 😁

The book should be here to.orrw Nd I'll take it from there.
Thanks everyone for your word of wisdom, success stories 👏 and messages of good luck.

Allan Carr book great. Makes so much sense and I recognised myself in the book. Gave up 10years ago and will never ever go back.
That book is all I needed.
Good luck 💪🏻

I jacked smoking in cold turkey 16 years ago, after a 24 year career of being a heavy(30+/day) smoker.
The main thing I remember is that I had continuous cold symptoms for about three months post quitting, as my immune system adapted. I also became fascinated by perfume, as my sense of smell returned.
Other than that life went on pretty much as normal - I had a period of being addicted to Airwaves Black chewing gum as a substitute, but the resulting mouth ulcers put a stop to that.
And yes I did get fat but that was eventually sorted

I've actually realised today that I drink SO much LESS water than I did few weeks ago when full on smoking. Instead I munch. It looks like that now my mouth don't get dry from smoking. So back to proper hydration instead.

The only thing that happened was that my wallet had more money in it. I gave up cold turkey after 30 years of heavy smoking - nothing bad happened at all. I carried some nicotine lozenges around for a few weeks but never opened the packet. Still had my work breaks in smoker's corner with my pals, didn't want or need one even when I was surrounded by smokers.

I didn't get grumpy, gain weight or any of the things that people worry about. I think a lot of it is in your mind - if you really want to do it you'll do it, without using all the crutches which a lot of people surround themselves with.

Good luck !
