Think this is weird about my 13 month old?

My 13 month old isn’t bothered by toys, despite having lots to choose from at home. All he wants to do is look at his books. He has a book box full of books and chooses one, brings it over to one of us to read to him, then will sit and listen to the whole story, which is nice, but he’ll do it over and over again.
He isn’t interested in any of his other toys really.
Is this something we should be concerned about?

No! My first was like this. Still a voracious reader and very bright. She also liked to sit and watch the washing machine. I wish my second had been that easy! Treasure it. Being able to amuse oneself is life’s most important learning.

She never liked toys except Lego. Cheap child!

I wouldn't worry. Does he like toys at toddlers groups or nursery if he goes?

cochineal7 · 17/11/2019 15:06

Like grown-ups, kids also have different interests and as he is only 13 months lots of things will still change. Love of reading is a good thing to establish early on. At the moment he probably likes the snuggling up and hearing your voice. Get some interactive books if you want to encourage play activity.

Agree with Wheredidigowrongggggg cherish it. One of mine was like that I thought I'd scream if I had to read room on the broom one more time. Still loves reading. The ones that weren't into reading were the hardest work.

You reading to him means he has your attention.

MRex · 17/11/2019 15:09

Has he ever been interested in anything else and this is just a recent phase? Does he have a range of toys; balls, musical instruments, stuff with lights, cars, blocks, boxes/ blankets to hide in etc? Do you play with him with other toys or only books, so he's doing it for attention? Does he like playgrounds and active games too? Is he trying out letters and words already (just wondering if he's fixated because he's learning and you'll have an early talker)?

For comparison DS is older and always loved stories (the same ones over and over especially early morning in our bed), and can get fixated on one toy when he's learning something, but he usually also likes to switch between activities across a day and certainly over a few days he will play with lots of different things.

ethelfleda · 17/11/2019 15:12

Is this a stealth boast?
Anyway - no don’t be concerned! My DS has been into books hugely since that age. He is two now and he still loves books. But his into his toys as well!

Caterina99 · 17/11/2019 15:29

DD was like that at that age. It was nice, but also tedious for me having to read all day. She’s just turned 2 and although she likes books for bedtime, she isn’t any more interested in them than any other 2 year old we know. They go through phases. That’s definitely one of the better ones though!

Bloodyinsomnia123 · 17/11/2019 18:14

Yeah, same as Caterina. My DD went through the same phase, then she wasn't interested in books for a while and now she's averagely interested for her age. I think the toys available to her at around 12- 13 months just weren't particularly interesting to her?
