WIBU to get rid of my uni textbooks?

ibblebibbledibble · 17/11/2019 14:19

I have loads of textbooks from uni, I graduated nearly 20 years ago. Although I work in the field I studied in I’ve never actually looked at the books but never been able to get rid of them ‘just in case’. I really need to declutter!
Did you keep yours or get rid?!

Haha we moved house last year and I finally got rid of my books from 12 years earlier! Just get rid - you will never look at them if you haven't in all this time!

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/11/2019 14:32

I got rid of mine having not looked at them in 20 years. 20 years later, and there's one or two that would be really useful to have, but now hugely expensive.

Butchyrestingface · 17/11/2019 14:34

I started uni in ‘96 and it was only this year, when I embarked on a Marie Kondo-esque declutter the like of which central Scotland has never seen, that I finally donated them all to charity.

Reader: I have pined for them not a whit.

burnoutbabe · 17/11/2019 14:34

They lose most value as soon as a new edition cones out (as I as n finding am buying second hand versions of non core textbooks -£5 inc postage over £30 new.
So get rid and if needed you can buy a more up to date version if ever needed.

ForalltheSaints · 17/11/2019 14:39

Other than if something is a book read beyond university study, they may be of value to someone. I only kept one, and that is a book read much wider than in the area of study.

BlackCatSleeping · 17/11/2019 14:41

I got rid of mine and my files of notes. It was a bit of a sad moment but never missed them for a second.

DramaAlpaca · 17/11/2019 14:43

I've still got all my university texts in the attic, I graduated in 1985. I did English literature though, so they won't go out of date.

redexpat · 17/11/2019 14:46

Ive got rid of some of mine from 15 years ago. I learned from my mistake and sold all of my others cheap when I finished my second degree 2 years ago.

ditsybag · 17/11/2019 14:52

I've kept mine Blush no I haven't re read them (most of them) but I must admit they give me joy seeing them on my shelves. Reminds me of a time pre-DC when I had half a brain Grin I like the look of shelves filled with books in a room, though.

CondeNasty · 17/11/2019 14:57

I kept mine for the wrong reasons initially. Because they made me look clever. The truth is no one else gives a crap. Wish I had sold them straight away while they still had value! Finally went in a Kondo purge.

Wheredidigowrongggggg · 17/11/2019 15:00

I gave mine to students In the tear below as I went along! Why keep? These days print is outdated pretty much immediately.

Times10 · 17/11/2019 15:02

I have been getting rid of notes this year, and haven’t missed them. We didn’t really have books on my course, but DH still has all of his, even though he’s never glanced at them since. I think a lot of the info can go out of date pretty quickly, depending on the subject.

Lillyhatesjaz · 17/11/2019 15:17

I kept mine my DS has done a similar degree (biology related) and my books are now so out of date as to be unusable

milveycrohn · 17/11/2019 15:22

I think it is difficult to get rid of these books straight away, when you have put so much effort into studying your chosen subject.
However, if you had just left uni, you could have sold them on, or donated to your uni - for secondhand books, provided they were in reasonable condition.
Twenty years on - just let go, and donate them to a charity shop. They will probably be out of date, anyway.

APerkyPumpkin · 17/11/2019 15:27

I gave most of mine way either to friends or to the Step Daughter.

curlykaren · 17/11/2019 15:31

Mine are still on my bookshelves, 20 years later. A lot of them are about the EU so rapidly becoming completely irrelevant. I may keep them to reminisce over in my dotage.

floraloctopus · 17/11/2019 15:39

I got rid of all mine as soon as I graduated, I barely used them during my degree let alone had much intention to do the same after. I'm about to do the same with all my teaching books as they are wasting space I don't have.

DelurkingAJ · 17/11/2019 15:46

Mine went to DH’s school library. Delighted to see the back of them.

Dutch1e · 17/11/2019 15:53

Good for you. And anyone still hanging on, pulp them, they're redundant unless you sell them immediately to the incoming year.

Ummmmcake · 17/11/2019 16:07

I kept mine for a while because I wanted to be able to remind myself of topics I might need in a new job, but already after five years my books were rather outdated. I suppose I could have kept some of the ones that were primarily maths, but we lived in a small house and I needed to declutter.
