To wonder why we’re not doing more to stop Britain going under water

I learned yesterday that in 30 years only, because of global warming and rising sea levels, much of Lincolnshire and other areas (Cardiff for example), will be permanently under water.
We are seeing such changes, and yet don’t seem to be making this a massive deal. Climate change activists are still being seen as cranks; when really this is an unprecedented change to our way of life. Not only that, but immigration will keep on rising as others from abroad will want to move to higher land. Not a weird science fiction fantasy but real.

Why do you think Greta Thurburg is sailing on yachts that are wind and solar powered? Because taking a cruise ship running on diesel engines is worse than flying.

The crews flew last time. I am not sure if they changed it now.

stupid planning policies are coming back to bite us. The Sheffield Meadowhall centre is built on a flood plain. It has flood defences but the water has to go somewhere - hence the flooded houses and streets.

newbuilds are often built on flood plains, or their very construction will make the area flood. Meanwhile thousands of existing houses sit empty because the tax regime discourages renovation and encourages building.

vote for stricter planning and higher taxes if you want to change this. Bet you won't...

I expect part of it is denial that it will happen, and also partly that many of the places that will be first to suffer are not where decision-makers live. In fact many of those are places with a reputation for backward looking 'yokels', which may be completely unfair but I think has an influence.

Here are some facts for you all.
Maritime shipping is #2 for world CO2 emissions, accounting for 26%
And one container ship puts out as much CO2 as 50 million cars. This calculation was done using a new container ship versus a 2017 Ford Focus diesel car.

Not being avid consumers of goods from distant countries will do far more to cut CO2.

Oops. Sulfur. Onevship puts out as much sulphur as 50 million cars. Sorry for misreading that.

Fully agree about the stupid town planning! Who in the right mind wants to build on flood plain

@wideopenspace Anyone who thought that Brighton would be underwater is very unfamiliar with how hilly it is. Lol
