To wonder why people think that Labour can't win?

BooHaa · 16/11/2019 21:42

It seems that everywhere I turn I see Labour supporters yet there also seems to be a narrative that Labour won't win the election. Based on what I've seen, there is a lot of support for Labour and I'm wondering, do they stand a chance?

I ask this as someone trying to make sense of it all with no political agenda

Does anyone remember a time when both parties were this poor?
Lib Dems may do well as a result. Corbyn+Abbott, Boris + I'm not even sure who his sidekicks are anymore.

SweetSummerchild · 16/11/2019 22:29

I’ll just leave this here. The results are consistent with a lot of recent polls.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/11/2019 22:29

I’m not sure LibDems will do so well

They were fully in support of many of the Tories cut backs in recent years

ethelfleda · 16/11/2019 22:30

YANBU OP
People thinking they won’t do well puts people off voting for them. I even had a wobble earlier after I learned there would be no Brexit Party candidate in my constituency. I considered briefly defecting to LibDem. I think I will stick with Labour though.
I haven’t got anything against Corbyn and feel he has been subjected to an unfair smear campaign. And Boris is far fucking worse anyway!

iolaus · 16/11/2019 22:33

Because the media wants a certain result - and will spin things to get it the way they want

If people think there is no point they won't vote

housemdwaswrong · 16/11/2019 22:36

@SweetSummerchild tiny sample though, 4151. But it's being treated as a referendum definitely.

Cuddling57 · 16/11/2019 22:38

I would like to vote Labour this time but I can't because of Corbyn and their crazy policies!
I can't vote Tory because of Boris and their crazy policies!
I can't vote Lib Dem because the person running for MP in my area lives an hour away Confused.
I may have to hold my nose and vote Green but the person running for MP in my area lives about 45mims away (I just hope they commute using an electric car Confused)!
It beggars belief!

noodlenosefraggle · 16/11/2019 22:41

I remember when I was studying politics aeons ago ( the 90's) whole swathes of Scotland were Labour. Their support in England and Wales would not have got them into government. They have all but disappeared now in Scotland and Wales. That's why I think people ( even, I suspect those within Labour) dont think they'll win, even without their brexit debacle.

littlepaddypaws · 16/11/2019 22:46

bootha i was giving an answer to your op question, hardly rude to say what a lot of people are already saying.

Thenextnamechange · 16/11/2019 22:57

The party to a labour majority is through Scotland and the SNP have wiped them out. To compensate they would need to stay pretty Central and the shift to the left means that majority will not happen. I am not clear whether they might manage with just SNP support if they were lucky? If they need Lib Dem support then they might be a minority government to hold a referendum But I don't think Lib Dems would support much of the Labour manifesto.

MurrayTheMonk · 16/11/2019 23:02

Corbyn
Momentum
The nation has swung massively right due to all the Brexit rhetoric about making Britain great again, two world wars and one World Cup, empire nonsense-and it will thus not vote Left. Current Labour policies are very Left.

Justanotherlurker · 16/11/2019 23:10

Because a lot of the middle class left vote have spent the last 3 years saying anyone voting leave was uneducated and easily led.

Because even though Corbyn himself isn't hard left (he is just a throw back to the 70's activist type) he his having his strings pulled by McDonnell who is an out and proud marxist offering simplistic populist policies for those who think they are not easily led (Student loans last time, Free broadband this time) that think it is a simple black and white situation.

Because despite what the Momentum bots think, he does have ties to some very shady figures, wasn't influential in NI peace process and with his recent parroting of Russian talking points re syria. (but muh russian funding of the tory party will be the reply without a hint of irony that the current Alastair Campbell is Stewart Milne)

Whatever straw man you are trying to set up, it's you who are politically and intellectually inept. If you cannot see why people would vote differently without calling out the comical daily fail then it's on you to become more educated.

The country hasn't swung right at all, the tear among the political lines wasn't because the cons had some traditionalists with a large contingent for remain as it was financially viable.

It was the labour stronghold working class vote, the ones who have had decades of listening to right wing media and still voting labour every election that caused the tear, it's the labour party that has had to sit on the fence of being the party for the working class and why Labour have come out with bullshit policies of nationalising broadband, previously it was getting rid of student debt which they dropped very quickly when it was scrutinised and funnily enough not brought back to the table.

PrettyShiningPeople · 16/11/2019 23:30

Lib Dems may do well as a result.

I doubt it. Are you aware of the equalities manifesto they released this week?

I have no idea who to vote for as they’re all showing themselves to be utterly bloody bonkers.

malfoylovespotter · 17/11/2019 00:09

Because Jeremy Corbyn.

Gutted he's the leader as I just can't vote for him.

gluteustothemaximus · 17/11/2019 00:16

Don't give a shiny shit who's labour leader. Labour is closest to my political views. Labour is who I will vote for.

If people think Boris and a tory government is better than corbyn and labour, God help us.

CendrillonSings · 17/11/2019 00:20

Corbyn shouldn't be a barrier though, should he?

You don’t think the Labour party swinging to the far left and mysteriously becoming chock-full of antisemites under his leadership should be a barrier?

BingoLittlesUncle · 17/11/2019 00:27

Scotland. Labour have never been able to form a govt. on the basis of their seats in England & Wales (they don't stand in NI remember) and the Scots Nats have slaughtered them in Scotland. If they can recover ground in Scotland, they might do it. But that's a hell of a hill to climb.

Tellmetruth4 · 17/11/2019 01:26

Haven’t read the previous posts but I was in a pub in West Essex yesterday and whilst waiting for DH to get my drink overheard a group of older guys - maybe 50s/60s talking politics so earwigged. I was genuinely really surprised to hear them talking about how much they can’t stand Johnson and were voting Labour. They looked like what many people would assume to be Tory’s - 50/60s with strong cockney accents. I think we’re in for a hung parliament.

SeaOfDespair · 17/11/2019 01:48

I think charisma and media influence have a lot to do with it. What people define to be a good leader is usually based on charisma, someone who scrubs up well and spouts a load of soundbites.

Remember in 2010 when David Cameron used strivers vs scroungers? It was used to attack the poorest in society and people were loving it. I kept hearing that "depression isn't an excuse not to work" and "lazy scroungers shouldn't be paid a penny". The media backed it up and put out nonsense about people on benefits.

This year, the main buzz isn't about benefits, but rather Brexit and immigration. Many of their stories don't end make a lot of sense. Brexit has been used as a left v right issue, when it most certainly isn't. The original idea wasn't anything to do with the actual EU issues, but Cameron thought it would get him voted in and that remain would win.

There was a lot of 'tactical voting' going on over the last 2 general elections, which was pretty silly. I would imagine that people will tactically vote again, based on their referendum decision and perception of what the parties will back. The reason why doing this is particularly silly, is because you could end up voting for a party that don't reflect your views. If you're left wing and would usually vote labour, then Lib Dems aren't going to suit your views, especially as the leader is quite hard line, more so than many actual Tories.

ethelfleda · 17/11/2019 07:13

Gutted he's the leader as I just can't vote for him

I keep seeing people saying this and I honestly think it’s just another pointless repeated sound bite.
Firstly, it’s not that you CANT it’s that you don’t WANT to.
Secondly, you’re not voting for Corbyn... unless he is your local MP?

Politics is often a subject that people know very little about but will pretend to know more than they do in order to be viewed in a certain light by their peers. Hardly a anyone actually does any research and people just repeat over and over phrases they’ve heard from other people that they think sound good.

I haven’t got a problem with anyone voting for any party - as long as they fucking think about it!

One of DHs work mates is incredulous that Labour will tax the very rich, for example. And is trying to show everyone what a good little Tory voter he is. Because he wants to be seen a certain way - a successful, wealthy, middle class/elite type. The reality is, he earns less than £30k, is mortgaged up to his eyeballs and spends what little spare cash he has on ‘fashion’ t shirts, while his partner and baby likely go without.

You know, you don’t have to tell anyone who you’ve voted for. In fact, you could lie about it. Nobody would know! Got a load of left wing mates who worship the ground Corbyn walks on but you want us to leave the EU with Johnson’s deal? Then wax lyrical with your mates about how you’d never vote blue but happily skip along to poll both and stick your X in the Tory box... nobody needs to know!

Am I’m voting Labour!

FOJeremy · 17/11/2019 07:22

Their policies will bankrupt the country. Free this, free that. It’s absurd. Everyday there’s a new one and it’s getting silly now.
