Are these a requirement?

I’m pretty sure we do not have any, if we did where would we find these?

Thanks

When I lived in my old flat I didn’t have gas so I felt like I didn’t need one (had decent fire detectors that were tested every often though). Anyway, my grandad insisted that I got a carbon monoxide detectors as I lived above a restaurant that that may have had a gas supply. So I bought one and put it up. So could you just buy one? They aren’t overly expensive I don’t think?

phoolani · 17/11/2019 20:43

Buy one. Only a tenner or so. One actually saved my life when I lived in a rental property. I bought my own and the LL wasn’t even an arsehole. It’s just easier and safer to get one.

There have been two cases in the news recently where small children have fallen from the upper windows of rented properties. In both instances the parents said they had reported the unsafe window latches to the landlord and were waiting for him to replace them

I really cannot understand why people would live in unsafe conditions just because they feel that someone else should remedy the problem

This is the most idiotic post ive seen here in a while and posted

  • post Grenfell

  • post Barne Barton fire

  • post Barking fire.

Like people have a choice

You absolute bloody tool!

And its in many tenancy agreements that tenants are NOT alllowed to do certain repairs.

But of course as you are all for tenants acting like they are owner occupiers when it comes to these things i bet you are all for tenants getting the same rights that OO get

bet you arent

Re OP we had our own carbon monoxide detectors which we purchased To us this was no big deal in the scheme of things.

GreenEyeBlueEye · 17/11/2019 21:00

Our new home has got CM detectors so we do not have to buy any if we didn’t have them I would certainly buy these.

What is idiotic is comparing fires and external building material choices to securing a window latch. Of course a tenant can secure a window latch. Lots of babyproof products on the market for very little money. Also, why would you leave a child anywhere near a window that they could open by themselves?Shock

When I moved in I asked to pay 2 months upfront so I wouldn’t have to pay rent over Xmas, they took my money & then took rent the next month

This is the strangest thing I’ve ever heard. So you couldn’t just leave your December rent in the bank and, I don’t know, not spend it?

Also I doubt ‘they’ will have taken the extra rent as rent is usually a standing order, not a direct debit. Meaning that you’re in control of it, not the estate agent.

GreenEyeBlueEye · 18/11/2019 10:49

@forthefew I was paying everything at one time so it made sense to me to just pay it then.

The comment about choosing to live in unsafe conditions and expecting somebody else to remedy the problem comes from a place of ignorant privilege and a hostile culture towards tenants The same culture that means tenants dont get listened to when they report dangerous practices or unqualified "multi purpose operatives" Its this culture and this attitude that led to Grenfell. In fact its been given a name. Institutional indifference.
