To think that the surgery should tell me that Mirena has run out?

Just went for a smear test. Inquired about how long I’d had the Mirena as it felt like ages. Obviously it’s not the most pleasant experience so had put it to the back of my mind.
It’s been 6.5 YEARS! No one told me when I had it put in that it was my responsibility to check the dates. I’ve had no periods. Thank goodness I haven’t become pregnant in that time- would have had no idea.
I’ve been to dr for various bits and pieces over last year and a half. They’ve sent letters and texts for other different things.
AIBU to ask that they could have mentioned it? So annoyed.

I had my smear test in May 17. It was the first time in 7 years Blush so remember pretty well Shock

Can all of you definitely tell me when your last smear test was if it wasn’t in the last year?

No - I rely on my surgery for that.

My last smear was January 2018.

I had a credit card-sized reminder card given out with an expiry date for me to put somewhere.

Often by the time 5 years comes around, people have moved and changed GP surgeries, mine was put in at a family planning clinic so it’s a different computer system than the GP anyway.

simple solutions for you for next time:
a) keep the expiry card
b) set yourself a diary alert on your phone
c) write it down somewhere you can check
d) post it on your facebook (bit iffy, but it may come up as a memories post in 5 years!)
e) tell a good friend or your partner to remind you
f) get a photo mug made with “I Love My Mirena (expires Dec 2025!) ...... ok, maybe not that last one....

Sorry OP, but it's not their responsibility to tell you. Same as they don't call me up when my medication runs out - it's up to me to renew the prescription.

The last time I had a mirena , the nurse gave me a card. It had date of insertion and of expiry on it. She told me to keep it safe as a reminder to get a new one
