First time, NEC (which I’ve never been to either), with two young teens plus another family and dd’s friend. What’s it like? How big? Safe for them to go off on their own? I just don’t really know what to expect! Any tips for survival greatly appreciated. They are the fans, not me. Thank you 😊

its hella fun, huge, and no I wouldn't let them go off on their own if they're under 15 tbh, not unless you can trust them implicitly, its packed.

The NEC is also doing the Bike Show this week, so it'll be busier than normal, that pulls in A LOT of people.

If you do separate make sure you have an agreed meet-up place. But you'll have a great time it's a blast!

Oooh I love Comic con, my kids got me into it, last time I went I was dressed as Mary Poppins...

Not been for a couple of years to the NEC. It's held over a couple of halls which are interlinked so there's nowhere to wander off to, so yeah it's safe for them to go round by themselves, just either have a meeting up point or make sure they have a mobile with them as it does get quite crowded.

Tips.. comfy shoes and plenty of money and be prepared for lots of photos being taken especially if they are dressing up, it's amazing how many people want to take photos of you if you're dressed as their fave character, last time DS went as Spiderman and ended up in a group photo of well Spidermen lol.

Some of the costumes are amazing, ,the Star Wars group are fab and do a Star wars march into the venue.

It can get pricey if the kids want photos with the people attending, not sure who is there this year, but my lot have been thrilled to meet some of their idols and have professional photos taken and the stars have always been super nice with them..

Enjoy yourselves. I can't help feeling a little jealous xx

I’ve taken mine to London Comicon a few times. Best thing is seeing all the costumes and some of the talks quite interesting. Definitely let mine go off alone (age 11 and 13) with their friends. Just regular checkins on phone. Felt very safe though.

It will be fine just make sure you have a meeting place. Are you dressing up in costume ? It’s pretty much impossible to not have fun at comic con

We went to the Manchester one a few years ago when DD was a young teen. It was a cheerful sort of event - harmless escapism.

power pack for phone if you have one. comfy shoes.

Dd goes to the Glasgow one with friends every year and has since she was 14.
It's not unsafe, but it is busy and can get very expensive.
She has a ball though.

I know the NEC like the back of my hand having been every year for Crufts on my own (and as a wheelchair user, you do a LOT of laps as the ramps are not suitable to get up alone in a manual chair).

This is way smaller than Crufts which is 5 halls, so you should be ok letting them go off in pairs or by themselves and actually they are likely to be less stressed and see more that way, trying to stick together in a group in a crowd is REALLY hard and stressful.

Identify a meeting point by GOING there AND noting it on maps, the place is big even if its only a couple of halls and can be quite confusing when busy and full of stands. There are also several identical locations (two Subways, multiple sets of toilets in halls that look identical), so pick something near a big external door, they all have HUGE numbers painted over them. Arranging to meet to the left of A5 for example is far clearer than 'meet next to Subway'.

Ensure meeting times are set, don't rely on being able to call/message each other, wifi can be really patchy and its usually too loud to hear ringtones.

Take easy to carry bags, take your own water and snacks, food is exorbitant and don't think you can nip out into the central area upstairs and go in McColls for cheaper food... they don't sell anything that directly competes with the stalls/stores inside the halls, particularly water.

If you want a meal at the NEC without huge crowds, its well worth walking over to the monorail and popping over to the airport for food, it won't be much cheaper... but there's lots of choice and less crowding.

Wear lightweight layers, it can get REALLY hot in there when it's full of people and trying to battle crowds, bags and extra coats is a pain in the backside.

Have fun!
