Or is my mum?

Kinda light hearted!

I'm going to a gig in London tomorrow, venue is a straightforward bus or tube journey from and to my hotel. (Hotel is in Camden, gig is in Kentish Town.) My mum (also on Mumsnet) has insisted I get a taxi back to my hotel. For context I am 31 and left home at 19, I also live miles away from my family. Grin It's because she knows I'm going to be out and about, she also makes me text her when I get home after visiting my family. I also know it's because she cares about me and worries about me. Smile

(I did say I was going to ask the nest of vipers, and my mum promised not to comment. Hello mummy! 💙 )

Not quite the same but the same protective concern. My mum used to grab my hand when crossing the road ( I’m a fifty something retired police officer who knows how to cross a road).

SeaViewBliss · 15/11/2019 18:55

Make sure you’re wearing your vest Wink

SapphireSeptember · 15/11/2019 18:57

And be very glad you have someone who loves you- it’s precious.

I couldn't agree more. Smile I'm very lucky. We had some rough patches when I was growing up but things improved a lot when I moved out.

You want to get a cab for two stops on the tube?

Woman up OP, and chill out OP’s mum. London isn’t the Wild West!

SapphireSeptember · 15/11/2019 19:01

@Finfintytint

Aww, that's really sweet! I assume old habits die hard.

I'll be wearing a bra? Does that count? Haven't worn a vest in years!

What does she think you’re going to do? People are presuming the danger comes from another, for all we know you could be out street drinking, sniffing some lines, and leading the local youth astray Grin and she is protecting them.

CmdrCressidaDuck · 15/11/2019 19:05

You want to get a cab for two stops on the tube?

This. Plus at gig curfew time you may well be standing in the street for that taxi for a while. Get the tube or a bus, whichever is faster. London isn't some hellpit and people actually manage to live here FT without taking taxis for a 20min or less walk. And sorry Mum, but your grown up children get to decide how they get around.

Finfintytint · 15/11/2019 19:07

It was sweet. She died earlier this year and I still miss her protectiveness. I’m now the one grabbing my 25 year old’s hand. As you say, old habits die hard. He thinks I’m a loon, lol.

SapphireSeptember · 15/11/2019 19:08

@FAQs That's brilliant! Grin
That's right, I'm a total degenerate, and totally plan on getting the local kids high (on chocolate.) Grin

@Finfintytint I'm sorry. Flowers Your DS will probably remember it fondly too. Smile

I sent the link to my mum, who's watching it. She said at least she doesn't have to worry I'll be in spiky high heels. (I never wear high heels.)

Kentish Town to Camden?

You'll die of hypothermia before a cab manages to get to you.

FAQs · 15/11/2019 19:14

See she is just fed up of busting you out of jail.

Poor kids, Sapphires mum, leave it to the feds. 🤘

Finfintytint · 15/11/2019 19:15

Thank you. I fully expected her will to stipulate I must be signed up member of the Tufty Club!

FriedasCarLoad · 15/11/2019 19:21

Ah, would your lovely mum like to adopt me?

Although I’m afraid I agree with you here. Up to you how you get around. Having said that, if mum’s paying for the taxi, go for it Wink

SapphireSeptember · 15/11/2019 19:22

@FAQs LOL! Noooo! Do I at least get my phone call? Sad

@Finfintytint That would be amazing if it did. You're welcome.

My mum does this and I am fighting the urge to do the same with DD19 who went to university in Europe in August. (I manage not to fuss too much out loud but I do still have Find My Friends enabled on her phone - which she knows).
The compromise I have come to with my mum is that I travel home any which way I choose but I will then text to say I have arrived safely.

SapphireSeptember · 15/11/2019 19:36

@FriedasCarLoad

I'll ask her. Smile I don't think she'd mind!

It’s a 5 minute walk and the area will be very busy. Very safe.

VeniVidiVoxi · 15/11/2019 19:41

Dear god have you not seen all the documentaries; slient witness, midsomer murders, Sherlock Holmes (maybe, I'm making this all up) where the taxi driver did it?!? According to all sources you are safer on a tube.

Disclaimer- this may or may not be true. Never been to London.

justthecat · 15/11/2019 19:45

My son is 27, 6ft 3,very muscular, heavy tattooed. Still let’s me know he’s ok, I’m with your mum

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 15/11/2019 19:58

Presuming the gig is at The Forum, it’s a maybe 2 minute walk to the tube...probably less or you can get a choice of three buses to Camden from outside the tube station, it’s a barely 10min journey either way!

You will be on a tube or bus before the taxi has got to you!

I live in Kentish Town, 4 mins from the forum, I’ll assure your mum that Kentish Town is totally safe Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/11/2019 20:16

I’m with your mum in theory BUT if you know the buses etc will be busy then go with that.

You should text her so she knows your ok.

Bourbonbiccy · 15/11/2019 20:39

This reminds me of my mum, we had a deal I would get home how I thought safest and would always txt when I got home, even at 3 in the morning, she insisted.
It was great to know she cared so much, maybe that's the deal to be had

Big hello to the mum of SapphireSeptember 🤗

CalleighDoodle · 15/11/2019 20:45

Well im 41 and every week my mother tells me not to get attacked when i walk my dog. She never tells my brothers not to attack anyone Hmm im with you.

@VeniVidiVoxi Grin documentaries Grin

19lottie82 · 15/11/2019 20:47

Aw that’s dead nice. My mum isn’t here anymore but that’s something she would have said Smile (As well as warning me to make sure no one could spike my drink!)
