I think my dentist has poisoned me (with gluten, not actual poison)

I have coeliac disease.

Went to the dentist a few hours ago for an appointment for a denture impression. The dentist assured me there’s no gluten in the putty or wax they use to do the impression, but here I am now starting to feel my typical gluten exposure symptoms. I haven’t eaten out or been at risk of exposure in any other way.

Does anyone know for definite if there is or isn’t gluten in the stuff dentists use to do impressions? I suppose I could be coming down with something else but the symptoms are pretty much identical to when I’ve been glutened before.

Thanks

I have had a look online and it looks like all the impression materials are gluten free. Some dentists still use powdered latex gloves which are not gluten free. We use latex and powder free gloves due to my latex allergy.
You need to contact them re gloves. In future just tell them you have a latex allergy then there is no risk of contamination.

It can't be the impression material, that's gluten free; its usually alginate for denture impressions.
What are your current symptoms?
Possibly you have a dentist that doesn't use nitrile gloves, and you've developed a sensitivity to latex?

OK, the wax, is literally that, and it is used as a locator of how your teeth bite together so no problem there.

The impressions will not have been done in alginate, that is usually for absolute basics. I expect that your impressions were done in silicone with a putty wash. None of which have anything which I understand would affect a coeliac sufferer.

Thank you so much for your replies, I guess he’s either the gloves or just happened some other way as I’m certain it’s gluten now - I have aching joints, can’t think properly, stomach craps, feel utterly wiped out and can’t stop shivering even under layers of blankets which are classic symptoms for me.

Thanks again for replying I will definitely ask about the gloves!

Could there be gluten in the mouthwash you're given to swill out?

katielilly · 15/11/2019 21:23

Tbh those symptoms aren't typical of a latex allergy either. Hope you feel better soon.

katielilly · 15/11/2019 21:32

No, there's no gluten in the surgery mouthwash either. Typical ingredients are: Sodium Bicarbonate/ Tartaric Acid/
Sodium Benzoate/Thymol/Saccharin.

OP, disposable gloves often have cornflour starch inside them. Call your surgery and speak to the dentist.

I must admit, I would not even have thought of it. When you speak to the dentist get them to mark up your notes so that they use different gloves.
