Pain after filling 30 weeks pregnant WWYD? Any dentists?

Hello,

On Tuesday I had a filling do a large hole that my dentist said was very deep and exposed a nerve. She put a semi permanent with a view to seeing how it went and said it was 50/50 whether the filling would be fine and could just be replaced by a permanent one in 6 months or whether it would need root canal treatment and at worst extraction.

I’m only 30 and generally look after my teeth so already gutted about this. Since Tuesday the pain has gradually been getting worse but it manageable with paracetamol (thank god as can’t take anything else).

Is this normal after a deep filling? Or a sign I need to go back and start the process of root canal treatment? Can you have this done in the third trimester? I’m really upset about the damage to my tooth along will worried about pain or it getting worse when I have a newborn so would really appreciate advice.

Sorry not really AIBU but posting for traffic!

I don't know, but I had root canal treatment when I was pregnant

It was also a lot less bloomin painful than normal fillings!

You should at least give the dentist a ring and see what they say- they'll have the x-rays and so on to check. Is it super-sensitive to cold or heat?

I've just had a root canal done, adn I was terrified it was going to be very painful, but it wasn't traumatic at all, just felt a bit bruised and tender for a few days afterwards. So a root canal isn't so bad, if you do end up needing one.

Thanks both @Chocolatekitty they didn’t do x rays as I’m pregnant and ones from before showed a small amount of decay which seems to have got a lot lot worse I think due to morning sickness early on and lots of vomiting! Is it a one trip thing for root canal or is it multiple trips? Just wanted it all sorted before baby arrives!

I had a root canal when pregnant with DC2, it was done over 2 appointments a week apart I think, each about 45 mins-1hour long. It wasn’t as bad as I’d feared.

During DC3 pregnancy, the root canal failed and was getting really painful, and I ended up having to have an extraction. That was probably the worst hour of my life! I hate the dentist Sad

I would go back. It doesn’t sound to be settling if it is getting worse not better.
Be prepared for another temporary filling, this time to access and dress the nerve. Then finish the root canal after the birth. That’s a guess at what they might do.
Root canal needs at minimum 2-3 x rays so that’s why it’s likely to be done shortly after birth instead.

Or have it out, that’s ok in pregnancy and all over before baby if that’s what you want.

Napqueen1234 · 15/11/2019 19:36

Thanks, aaah @Bickles the thought of having it removed kills me! It’s a back molar but after two sets of braces I’m so scared all my teeth will move if I have it out. And I’m with you @PotatoCity I hate the dentist 😭

It was a three-trip job for me, but I understand it's usually two- my dentist just said that she wanted to leave it an extra week with the antibiotics in the tooth rather than filling it straight up after fully clearing the root. Probably a good thing, since it took her longer than expected to fill it on the third visit- some issues with making sure the filling was in the right place, I think!
