Car insurance

Not an AIBU, but not sure what to do.

My car insurance for me and DH automatically renewed this year, which is fine. I then received a letter from the insurer asking for our driving histories. My driving history is unblemished but unbeknownst to me, DH has incurred speeding points in the last year.

He doesn't really drive my car much so I would prefer not to incur added expense, but I am worried that the insurer will ask why I never declared these points.

Do you think I should tell the insurance company that DH has these points or should I just call them and them to remove him from the policy?

Of course you have to declare it but will he never drive your car if you remove him?

wherearemymarbles · 15/11/2019 13:23

Remove him from the policy. If he has an accident they can refuse to pay. If the accident involves a 3rd party they will pay and then can come after you to recoup there costs.

Its not worth for a 10-15% increase in your premium!

ColaFreezePop · 15/11/2019 13:24

They will charge you to alter the policy anyway so just remove him.

wherearemymarbles · 15/11/2019 13:24

Their costs!

jimmyhill · 15/11/2019 13:25

Ring them. Tell them about points. Explain why you didn't declare (you didn't know!)

They will requote you. If the price rise isn't worth it take him off the policy.

It's no big deal. You just need to communicate with your insurer.

Probably not for an auto renewal processed in last 14 days. You should be able to cancel the whole policy for free.

honeygirlz · 15/11/2019 13:29

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately the 14 day Peru is has lapsed. I’ll give them a call.

Peru? Period!

Also, take your insurance off auto renewal - it is nearly always more expensive than you can get if you shop around - even from the same company.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/11/2019 13:39

Having one set of speeding points on your insurance won't necessarily make it more expensive.

My insurance was cheaper with DP on it with 3 points for speeding than it was for me on my own, and I don't have any points at all.

They can find out about his points in their information sharing agreements anyway, so chances are they already know and are asking you to confirm. I'd send them the histories, see what effect it has on the price and remove DH if it makes it more expensive.

But you need to check these things, as there would have been a 'by letting this insurance renew you have checked that all the information is correct' statement that you agreed to.

honeygirlz · 15/11/2019 13:41

@Hecateh for some reason this year my renewal fee was really reasonable and less than what all the comparison websites quoted me! It was a first and I was pleasantly surprised and happy until I asked my husband for his driving license number to get his history and he confessed the points!

honeygirlz · 15/11/2019 13:43

@BarbaraofSeville thanks, that gives me hope.

Sorry to drip feed, but having DH on the insurance made it cheaper by £100, so removing him may see my quote go up.

OP posts:
honeygirlz · 15/11/2019 13:47

@Pipandmum he very rarely drives my car (he has his own).

It’s handy for him to be insured on it (today he drove it to change the tyre for me) but definitely not essential.

OP posts:
BarbaraofSeville · 15/11/2019 13:50

So it might go up, but even if it does, it is unlikely to go up by more than £100 if DH only has one set of normal speeding points, ie 3 points, SP30 code.

So it's still cheaper to have him on there.

Lifecraft · 15/11/2019 13:57

No they can't. They can find out about previous claims made on other motor insurance policies, but convictions fall under data protection and they will only know if they are told. Or you give permission for them to run a DVLA licence check

busybarbara · 15/11/2019 14:09

If he has his own comprehensive insurance he can probably still drive your car if absolutely necessary but third party only.

Chocolatelover45 · 15/11/2019 14:31

They will probably charge you to take him off anyway as it's a change. Phone them and ask them whether it's cheaper to declare the points or take him off. IME they don't charge for 3 points but there will be an admin fee. Alternatively you could leave him on but don't let him drive as they may refuse to pay out if he has to claim.

pumpkinpie01 · 15/11/2019 14:38

Are the points for speeding in a 30 ? If so it probably won't go up that much but if it's for careless driving then that could make more of a difference .

pumpkinpie01 · 15/11/2019 14:39

Sorry I can see you have said speeding !
