To ask for Spanish hot chocolate recommendations

Years ago when I used to visit my grandma and grandad in Wales they used to cardigan and there was this little cafe that served the most amazing Spanish hot chocolate, literally like melted chocolate in a cup and your spoon would stand up in it it was so thick, I’m looking for a similar one I can make at home but sadly haven’t found any that come close, can anyone recommend anything similar ?

I think they add cornflour to the mix to thicken it. Pre-mixed Spanish powder definitely has cornflour in it too. I’m not sure how much though.

I know exactly the place you're referring to - Ultacomida in Aberystwyth - they do sell the powder to make it!

It is the stuff of the gods.

Loooper · 14/11/2019 18:46

If you Google 'Valor drinking chocolate' you can find places that sell it in the UK. I love Spanish hot chocolate. It's amazing stuff!

OwlinaTree · 14/11/2019 18:48

this is nice.

Cola cow! It’s lovely 😊

Autumntoowet · 14/11/2019 18:55

Valor.
Every time.
Spanish chocolate has flour in it to thicken it so you do need to cook it as per instructions.
Bare in mind you add more powder if you like it thicker BUT it goes thicker once it cools down.
I have some Valor here OP Grin

There is a saying in Spanish “things should be clear and chocolate should be thick”

Well that is a bad translation but you get the idea.

Autumntoowet · 14/11/2019 18:57

Cola cao is not thick, lovely for a cold chocolate drink but not considered Hot chocolate material

PentreBachCymraeg · 14/11/2019 19:08

The Spanish chocolate company, you can get it on Amazon. The hotter the milk, the thicker the drink.

ControversialFerret · 14/11/2019 19:13

The Spanish Hot Chocolate company. Asda used to sell it and then stopped. Fortunately Amazon sell it - and if you keep an eye out then every so often Aldi has it in on their special buys.

The milk has to be really, really hot to get it to thicken.

ControversialFerret · 14/11/2019 19:14

Valor chocolate is good but I prefer that for dunking churros - the SHC Co is better for drinking IMO.

MrsCasares · 14/11/2019 19:38

But you have to dip churros in it or it isn’t Spanish.

Autumntoowet · 14/11/2019 19:40

Nah, we dipped some toasted bread as we couldn’t get churros easily and they are more of a twice a year treat

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/11/2019 19:53

Oh , I got some from Aldi but when I got home I realised it had cinnamon in it so it put me off (I gave it to someone at work)

ControversialFerret · 14/11/2019 19:59

70 I don't like cinnamon but you honestly can't taste it.

This is a good one. Although I'd go for the El Barco one as I've been to the village they make it in.

tillytrotter1 · 14/11/2019 20:42

Thanks, just cost me a fortune on Amazon, better be good! I recall a coffee shop just up from Barcelona Cathedral where they served the most wonderful hot chocolate.
