To have only realised after THIRTY FIVE years that George Michael wasn't planning on a golden solo?!

Yes, I may as well share this with MN as it cheered DH up so much this morning...

I have only just realised (embarrassingly whilst singing this in earshot of DH Blush) that in Wake me you before you go go, George Michael wasn't actually singing "I'm not planning on a golden solo" and instead he just didn't want to be going solo Shock

(disclaimer: I was young when this song came out! I assumed a golden solo he meant he didn't want to be in the spotlight - having written that down I realise how fucking stupid it sounds Blush)

Also, he wasn't singing Cherrybug in this song either. Well who knew? (According to DH - everyone)

I'm dying a little inside here.

Well bloody hell, I just actually googled the Wham lyrics to see about the wanking thing (am I mauve?! I really don't think it is?) and my tiny mind is even more blown...

He sings "You make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day" Not the darkest day (which I actually think makes more sense anyway, sorry George).

I am now doubting my whole childhood understanding of everything and am too scared to google A-ha lyrics in case I've been singing those all wrong too....

(Loving that this thread is still going!)

I always thought that in What a Wonderful World, Louis Armstrong referred to the dogs saying goodnight. I will never forget the look on my sister's face when she told me it was "the dark sacred night". (This was about 25 years after I first heard it.) I guess it made more sense to follow the line "the bright blessed day" than going straight to two dogs sniffing and licking each others noses under a lamp post at dusk which was my mental image of the line!

Lweji · 16/11/2019 11:40

There's also a Spice Girls song (can't remember which one) which I'm sure has the lyrics "You have got to pick John up, never lose control". I've never googled because I like living in blissful ignorance.

Here, HTH:

"You have got to reach up, never lose your soul,
You have got to reach up, never lose control"
(Who do you think you are?)

Grin

Having said it, the first time, it does sound like they say John yes.

Paintingtheroseswhite · 16/11/2019 11:45

That famous Beatles lyric "Jojo was a man who thought he was a woman"

Andylion · 16/11/2019 14:12

Similarly, the boys of the NYPD cross the city (the boys of the NYPD choir still singing), in Fairytale of New York.

Yes, they were singing "Go away", right?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/11/2019 14:22

That famous Beatles lyric "Jojo was a man who thought he was a woman"

I always thought that too. As opposed to Sweet Loretta Martin, who was actually a man ?!?!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/11/2019 14:23

Am in hysterics at the idea of the Boys of the NYPD choir still singing "GO AWAY!!!!" Grin Grin Grin

TooManyPaws · 16/11/2019 14:52

"You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille. With four hundred children and a crop in the field."

No, it was a "crap" in the field. Autocarrot tried to change that to a "carp" just now which makes about as much sense.

Yes also to "came to me on a submarine" and "roofrack over my head".

Andylion · 16/11/2019 16:42

Thanks to the poster who mentioned California Dreaming. I downloaded a best of album from The Mamas and The Papas last night and listened to it on my walk to work this morning. It is -7 C (minus 14 with windchill), so I could relate. Smile

DS was singing along to my Paulo Nutini cd in the car. “I’ll be your model pupil tonight Dave, I wanna get ten out of ten.”

shinynewapple · 16/11/2019 22:40

Picked DS and his GF up from work and college yesterday . Mary Wells My Guy is on the radio in the car. GF starts singing to it .

'Wait, is this song called My Guy?' Asks DS 'I thought she was singing 'maggots, maggots, I got maggots '

Immediately thought of this thread. Grin

shinynewapple · 16/11/2019 22:42

Actually I've got that wrong - it was the 4 Tops My Girl ! (Always get those 2 mixed up- I'm as bad as he is!)

NameChange84 · 16/11/2019 22:55

Oh I have been SO wrong about Jason Derulo Want to Want Me.

Firstly, I have been listening to it on the radio for years and had no idea what it was called. I thought it was "I want you on me".

"In the back of the cab, I tipped driver had a ten" my version...thinking he gave him a tenner tip.

Real lyrics

"I tipped the driver 'head of time"

My version "I gotta drag" (no idea what this means)

Real lyrics "I want it bad"

My chorus;

"Girl? You know what? I want you ON me. Dunno what. But girl, you got me."

Actual lyrics

"Girl you're the one I want to want me
And if you want me, girl you got me"

I mean I could go on all night about how wrong I was with this song, but I'm knackered and want to go to sleep and irrationally hate Jason Derulo right now. Just kidding Jason you're adorable.

DwangelaForever · 17/11/2019 08:56

Oh my god. Another one George Michael related that I forget I used to sing wrong until yesterday.

Last Christmas

My lyrics "a crowed room, friends with tie-dyes, I'm hiding from you and your soul device (??? Wtf)"

Actual lyrics "a crowded room, friends with tired eyes, I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice"

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Bluesheep8 · 17/11/2019 09:19

squashfan I am enlightened! I'm 46 and you've just taught me that it's not "nowhere to go" amazing!!

shinynewapple · 17/11/2019 10:21

@DwangelaForever I thought the words were

'Hiding from you and your sordid lies'
At least this makes sense!!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 17/11/2019 10:41

Ariana Grande song, Dont call me angel.

I thought she was singing "Dont call me, hey jew."

Why is she singing "Angel" with an H sound?

SinkGirl · 21/11/2019 16:50

I heard one today that I’d forgotten about.

Think the band is The Kooks:
“Woa-oh, I love fairy cakes
She moves in her own way”

First time I heard it I thought, that’s a bit of a non-sequitur, but okay. Quickly realised I’d heard wrong, but it sounds far more like fairy cakes than it does the actual lyrics.

HeavyMetalHoneyMonster · 25/11/2019 00:25

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one whore soap and sleigh, hey.

HeavyMetalHoneyMonster · 25/11/2019 00:29

The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears 🐻 ner ner (inaudible)...

WHAT THE FUCK IS A HOLLY BEAR

Newmumatlast · 25/11/2019 00:54

All the lonely Starbucks lovers”. Correct lyric: “Got a long list of ex-lovers” from Taylor Swift’s ‘Blank Space’

I thought it was "look at all those Starbucks lovers" which made perfect sense to me as she goes on to say that she has a blank space and will write your name.. I thought it was a clever play on Starbucks writing people's names on their cups and a comment on the disposable and temporary nature of her relationships. I feel she missed a trick!

I also thought the song Babycakes by 3 of a kind included the lyric "I just want you to know oh oh I'll never feel another girl yeah yeah" when actually it's "I just want you to know oh oh that I think our love will grow yeah yeah". I prefer mine lol

NewtonPulsifer · 25/11/2019 00:56

BeeGees “should be dancing”,
Instead of “whatcha doin’ on your back?”
I heard, “whatcha chewin on? You’re fat!” Thinking it was to motivate someone into dancing the weight off Grin
