Unless you REALLY need one. I live 1/4 mile down a muddy track and I do not have one.

In the Times today:
SUVs 'were responsible for all of the growth in oil demand, of 3.3 million barrels a day, from passenger cars between 2010 and 2018, with total fuel consumption from other types of car falling slightly'

Surely soon it will be shameful to own one!

I advocate SUVs or Chelsea Tractors being large vehicles and that to drive them, you have to pass a separate test for them. Ask a person to have a smaller car or re-take their driving test, with their licence withdrawn if they fail, would reduce their numbers greatly.

Higher car park charges too would help.

Does that go for all vehicles of the same length, or is only height of vehicle that upsets you?

My brother goes on and on about single use plastics while buying bottles of water every day to take to work instead of filling from the tap because "it's not the same" He's a hypocrite too.

That exactly what single use plastics is ffs

Actual absolutely.
PS love your username Grin

flossletsfloss · 14/11/2019 20:50

Yawn yawn yawn. Love my SUV. No justifications. You sound jealous.

PortiaCastis · 14/11/2019 20:55

I'll stop using mine when people stop using energy to charge their devices which they use to bleat on at me.

FizzyIce · 14/11/2019 21:04

I have a Jaguar e-pace and I love it!
Sorry not sorry

sheshootssheimplores · 14/11/2019 21:09

I can’t stand them. A total statue symbol where I live. I refuse to have one even though we could afford it. I’m keeping my five year old fiat 500 until it dies a death.

Saddler · 14/11/2019 21:15

No

sheshootssheimplores · 14/11/2019 21:17

This is really fucked up thinking of me I admit. Particularly because I have little kids and want the world to be okay. But when I have to deal with these stuck up middle class twats at my school who park on corners and block traffic and wang on about their money and important jobs I can’t help have a wry smile to myself that their money won’t stop the earth from dying around them. Their privilege won’t shield their perfect family from the terrible future we have in store.

Climate change is a leveller. Money isn’t going to protect you. You can keep driving your Chelsea tractors and put your kids through private school. You can walk about with your Mulberry bags and take your three overseas holidays a year. Blinkers on. But it’s still going to kick your arse and if not your arse then you’re kids arse. We are all just scurrying ants on a dying planet and we’ve had our day.

Rubyupbeat · 14/11/2019 21:26

I have an SUV. It's a hybrid, and as I use it mainly locally, I very rarely use petrol. We have our own charging point.
We NEED it, as we have 2 large dogs who go everywhere with us, also I have bad mobility in my knee and hip, I also am 6ft, getting out of our other cars, literally cripple me, in the SUV I can just swing round to get in or out.

MyNameIsMrsGrumpy · 14/11/2019 21:36

Love my diesel guzzling 4x4 and guess what?? I’m not sorry!

However I don’t park like inconsiderable twat! Can reverse it...and drive like a normal human being, also I rarely take up 2 spaces in the car park what’s that all about??

My Diesel engine is far more environmentally friendly than most petrol cars, and believe it or not I actually NEED one where I live 🤷‍♀️

I also absolutely love my beaten up old car too, and I’m marginally fond of dh’s car...

wink1970 · 14/11/2019 21:55

I have a 4ltr v8 Range Rover and you can try taking it out of my cold dead suburban hands.

I cannot count the amount of near crashes caused by ‘nippy’ small cars I see on the motorway every day. Or the fucking sahm people carriers on local roads, driving with one hand whilst they rearrange their children.... so you can fuck off if you can’t see past me at junction, let’s face it you’re probably not looking anyway.

Oh and please don’t insult me by putting those awful quashquio, Juke abominations into the same bracket. Buy a shit people carrier, a proper car or a normal car, trust me you are not a ‘suv’.

GinDaddy · 14/11/2019 22:17

@wink1970

Wow.... just wow

GinDaddy · 14/11/2019 22:18

@MyNameIsMrsGrumpy

Your diesel is more environmentally friendly?

What about particulates, or do our lungs and the air we breathe, not really count?

aintnothinbutagstring · 14/11/2019 22:55

Don't know why people say, leave me and my SUV alone, we're vegan! Educate yourself, unless you're eating homegrown veggies/UK farmed and not industrially farmed soy, air freighted non seasonal and non-UK products, you're not helping the environment in any way.

Lovesgood · 14/11/2019 23:00

SUVs take up way too much space on tiny uk roads.

Lovesgood · 14/11/2019 23:02

And SUVs are UGLY as f..k. Seriously, seriously ugly.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 14/11/2019 23:04

I think the near misses wink sees are caused by other motorists chucking dictionaries her way Smile

RhinoskinhaveI · 14/11/2019 23:04

I think they're ugly too and they kind of self replicate, the reason we need more suvs is more suvs
if other people have them then you feel you need one to feel safe... so as not to be the smallest vehicle, it's just a never-ending arms race

RhinoskinhaveI · 14/11/2019 23:06

Have you checked your blood pressure lately Wink?
I have a suspicion it might be a little high?

LimitIsUp · 14/11/2019 23:08

I am currently studying 'Environment: Journeys through a changing world' with the ou and reading in depth analysis of climate change. Its not helpful to single out SUVs - my dh for example drives a 3L Audi A8 which is not a SUV but is every bit as bad in terms of CO2 emissions. My next car will be a hybrid and I hope to persuade dh to follow suit

And for the record there is so much more we need to do. If only it was as straight forward as the cars we drive

LimitIsUp · 14/11/2019 23:10

aintnothinbugastring - you know that's not true

LimitIsUp · 14/11/2019 23:13

"My Diesel engine is far more environmentally friendly than most petrol cars" It's really not!

JacksonPillock · 14/11/2019 23:18

Educate yourself, unless you're eating homegrown veggies/UK farmed and not industrially farmed soy, air freighted non seasonal and non-UK products, you're not helping the environment in any way

Most people don't switch the meat and dairy to a purely tropical veg diet.

More "industrial soy" is grown to feed animals than a vegan could ever eat.

So unless they tried really, REALLY hard to eat huge amounts of food from thousands of miles away every day, yes a vegan is making a difference. That's something basically every scientist and environmentalist agrees on.

But let's not derail the thread. Shall we go back to why nobody really NEEEDS a car? Grin
