Not told about Dyslexia screening?

9 replies

marzipanballsrule · 13/11/2019 23:10

DS2 is in year 6 and we found out today that he was screened for dyslexia back in March, results were 'moderate'

Aibu to be pretty hacked off about this as believe we should have been told and given feedback so we could support our DS? School don't seem too bothered and said results won't change the support he will receive??

Wow that's bad, but could they have sent a letter home with ds that might have gone astray? I only ask because both of mine were terrible for losing letters

Yes they should have told you. However , current teaching practice should cover any needs /Strategies at this level.
You could ask if the school did an indicator screening or an in depth screening, which would indicate if your child had a phonological awareness problem or a visual sequential problem etc...

Girlmama · 13/11/2019 23:24

Nah, as a school senco myself this isn't right. I would always make contact with parents first, share my concerns and seek permission to perform the screen.

ActualHornist · 13/11/2019 23:27

Erm....how is that even possible?

Both my twins are being assessed, we’ve had several meetings with teachers and the ‘assessment’ was a meeting with the ed psych (child had a separate one) who said they don’t do specific dyslexia testing it’s just special educational needs of which dyslexia might be a diagnosis.

Have you raised any problems with them? Have they with you?

Chilledout11 · 13/11/2019 23:27

I would certainly expect to be told of any concerns. I can't understand why they wouldn't have discussed this before now.

@1Morewineplease

Please do not give false information, the school should have absolutely told the parents.

It makes massive difference especially in SATS year with regards access arrangements for the tests.
