Is a year a long time to you?

Emlou07 · 13/11/2019 20:33

I always thought a year was a long time. But the older I get the faster the years seem to pass. Maybe because we are more busy with life?

I appreciate that it is relative. January felt like it had 92 days in it this year and now I feel like I have blinked we're nearly in the middle of November with yet another Christmas just around the corner!

Time definitely speeds up as you age.

This year is flying by. Quite disorientating sometimes. How the fuck is it mere weeks till Christmas 2019?

DramaAlpaca · 13/11/2019 20:34

Same as you, OP. The older I get, the faster the years go by.

BatEaredFox · 13/11/2019 20:35

No. A year is no time at all.

MamaWeasel · 13/11/2019 20:35

Not any more, the older i get the faster time seems to go.

runoutofideasnow · 13/11/2019 20:36

Time feels like it speeds up as you age as it's a smaller proportion of your life.
1 year is a third of my son's life but less than a 30th of mine.

Emlou07 · 13/11/2019 20:38

How the hell do we make it slow down a bit?! (Metaphorically speaking obviously)

I just don't want to blink and another 30 years have gone by with not a lot to show for it!

Yes definitely and everyone looks younger like politicians, secondary school dc

bakedtattie23 · 13/11/2019 20:40

Time is definitely going faster for me now, the past few years have whizzed by (I'm mid 30s).

I've read one way to make time feel like it's going slower is to try new things ajd visit new places.

runoutofideasnow · 13/11/2019 20:41

Just try to take time each day to breathe, look at a beautiful blue sky, walk in the woods, take a walk with no where to go, have a long bath with a book. Sounds cliche but try not to rush around too much doing things that don't need to be done.

bakedtattie23 · 13/11/2019 20:42

Sorry posted too soon and with typos! Novel experiences can help time feel slower. Getting stuck in a rut leads to that "the days drag but the years fly" feeling.

runoutofideasnow · 13/11/2019 20:43

@bakedtattie23 that's so true! Weeks whizz by when you do the same things over and over.

Yoohoo16 · 13/11/2019 20:47

I think this year has gone crazily quick. I’ve definitely blinked and missed 2019!

bakedtattie23 · 13/11/2019 20:47

@runoutofideasnow they really do. But tbh I've made a real effort this past 3 years or so to go on interesting trips away, daytrips etc and it still feels like time has gone fast. Though I guess 90% of weeks are still boring ones.

managedmis · 13/11/2019 20:49

Totally agree

Ouchmyleg · 13/11/2019 20:51

It definitely speeds up as you age.

How long did a week feel at school? It just dragged on and on and on. Now, even though the days feel long at work the week itself just zooms past and all of a sudden it’s the weekend again!

lookatthebabypenguin · 13/11/2019 20:51

January felt like it had 92 days

Very precise!

Jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 13/11/2019 20:56

Hit a certain birthday last weekend but for the last 10 years time has flown.

I blame dh, he crams in so much on his weekends home (friends, family, dog, house maintenance). I'm shattered by Sunday evening.

Been four years since he moved to London, I can remember his moving day, feels like yesterday.

My Grampa used to say "lt goes quick"

PurpleTreeFrog · 13/11/2019 21:02

I've made a real effort this past 3 years or so to go on interesting trips away, daytrips etc and it still feels like time has gone fast. Time flies when you're having fun - it goes quicker the more fun you have!

I find that having a lot of little milestones/landmark dates throughout the year seems to make the weeks pass really quickly. When you have the year broken up with school term dates I find that adds to that effect.

e.g. for me 'milestone' dates are things like house guests, special occasions, school holidays, and actual holidays away. I live abroad so I always have about 3 visits home to look forward to per year as well as visitors coming to me. So my year will be like:

Jan - Slow and depressing
Feb - 2 week school holiday, visit my family one week, visit in-laws the second week
Mar - Not much (Easter some years)
April - Easter, more school holidays, family may come to visit me
May - My birthday, DS1's birthday, sometimes have a weekend away
June - DS2's birthday, nice weather, lots of nice days out
July - DH's birthday, school holiday starts, go and visit family
August - school starts back again
September - still nice weather usually, more days out
October - school holiday, wedding anniversary, go and visit family
November - family coming to visit us, autumny events in town equivalent to Halloween or Bonfire night in the UK
December - loads of Christmassy stuff happening, school holiday

I am a SAHM so my life involves a fair amount of drudgery and repetition but when there are only like 2 weeks in between a lot of those interesting things, the weeks go so fast.

Ouchmyleg · 13/11/2019 21:09

@PurpleTreeFrog you’re right, there’s normally only a few weeks between any ‘big’ things happening in the year which makes it feel shorter

cstaff · 13/11/2019 21:10

There is no slowing it down I'm afraid. If you think of as a percentage of your life, at 2 that's 50% but by 20 it's only 5% and most of us are over 20 on here. Sorry ladies.

Emlou07 · 13/11/2019 21:10

I guess nothing I do will slow it down. But maybe my problem is feeling like another year has passed and I haven't achieved much. Or that I feel like the time is flying by and I'm just wasting it. If that makes sense?

bakedtattie23 · 14/11/2019 07:45

Time flies when you're having fun - it goes quicker the more fun you have!
That's true but I also find the first few days on a holiday seen to go slower, I think because I'm in different surroundings and paying attention more?

I find that having a lot of little milestones/landmark dates throughout the year seems to make the weeks pass really quickly
Ah yes, so true. I wonder if this is why things are going fast for me. Also a SAHM so lots of drudgery in between the fun things!
