It is just vinyl tiles isn’t it?

No, it's not.
I'm very happy with ours it takes very little maintenance.

userxx · 13/11/2019 08:31

It's not is it? Not sure what it actually is but I think it looks great.

Catsanddogs11 · 13/11/2019 08:31

What is it then if it is it vinyl tiles? I’m confused and happy to be convinced otherwise as I want to replace flooring

have a look at this...

I love our Karndean. It is vinyl but it's a luxury vinyl, similar to Amtico but Karndean has a more glossy finish. It's durable and has a very realistic wood/ stone effect. Although it is pricey, my DH is a floor layer so we can get it at trade price luckily. It's wonderful stuff!

Catsanddogs11 · 13/11/2019 08:38

But it is saying it is vinyl tiles I looked at the website and can’t see really what the difference is between Karndean vinyl and others. What is so much better about it?

I love it. Looks like wood without the hassle.

Gemma2019 · 13/11/2019 08:39

I've got Amtico which is like Karndean and it's the best floor I've ever had. It just looks so great and seems to look better with age. It's virtually indestructible and easy to clean. I get it in every house now.

WildCherryBlossom · 13/11/2019 08:40

I have wood. It is not a hassle.

CatUnderTheStairs · 13/11/2019 08:40

Ours must be 15 years old and is starting to lift and wear. Not been particularly looked after though.

Surely there are lots of other makes that are much the same? Why has one brand become so popular?

OP posts:
userxx · 13/11/2019 08:41

So it is! I didn't realise that, I thought it was wood!

Gemma2019 · 13/11/2019 08:44

Mine looks exactly like wood but doesn't dent or need the maintenance of wood.

There are other LVT brands just as good. You do need a really good fitter which does put the price up.

NoSauce · 13/11/2019 08:45

My NDN has wood, it needs sanding and waxing and looks tired after a while. That equals a hassle to me!

Toporama · 13/11/2019 08:45

We had Amtico in our previous house and it was great.

I didn't like the idea of vinyl flooring - would much rather have had natural materials. But vinyl was by far the best option for the room it was in and the sub-floor we had.

Can't fault it. It looked good, cleaned easily, just great all round.

People assumed it was wood.

midnightmisssuki · 13/11/2019 08:45

I have wood and amtico. No hassle to maintain at all? Agree - (to me) karndean looks like ordinary vinyl tiles, like a much less nice version of Amtico and fake wood. Just a personal preference though.

RowenaMud · 13/11/2019 08:47

I’ve never heard of it before but just looked at the website. It’s the same as the (word effect ie brown) Lino we had on the kitchen floor when I was a child. I suppose it is popular because it is so hardwearing. The same Lino is still in the kitchen 30 years later. It doesn’t look particularly nice but there is no maintenance. Lino isn’t to my taste but it is good if you have a dog especially.

Gemma2019 · 13/11/2019 08:48

You need to see it in person as the photos don't do it justice. It has a deep texture and is different to normal vinyl.

NoFun21 · 13/11/2019 08:48

Looks awful to me.

Gran22 · 13/11/2019 08:48

I've recently been in a house with Karndean parquet style flooring. Loved it.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 13/11/2019 08:48

Amtico in our hall, cloaks and kitchen/dining/ living room.

user1374384 · 13/11/2019 08:49

Oh I'm with you. I think it looks shit, no better than most laminated/vinyl. In particular the grey looks awful and faddy. The one exception is the oak coloured parquet one, NOT the grey. That one does look good, and I suppose would be cheaper than real parquet and practical in kitchen and bathrooms?

Does it matter if it is vinyl tiles or not?

I can't say as I'm obsessed with it but we are about to have our kitchen done and have chosen Karndean flooring so I can give you our reasons for doing so.

Firstly I'm 45, I have never had a new kitchen before and I probably never will again. Having waited my entire adult life to be in a position to have the kitchen I want I am willing to spend the money on a better quality finish including flooring. For that reason the lino we've always had previously is out. Not that there's anything wrong with lino, it's done us proud for decades.

Secondly neither of us like laminate flooring so that's out and we don't want other wood options as there is already a lot of wood in the units so it would be too much we want tiles.

We love the look of real stone but it is cold on the feet and I generally go barefoot at home. Plus it is very unforgiving if you drop anything so real stone is out.

We looked at porcelain and ceramic tiles but again they are cold, and one of them (I've forgotten which way round) prone to cracking if you drop a heavy object on it so we ruled those tile options out.

Which brings us to Karndean. It is the best quality non stone stone effect option that has a warmth to the touch, won't crack when I drip a pot/tin of beans on it, might have some give if I drop a plate/cup on it and comes in a realistic looking effect that matches our other choices.

My partner's aunt has had Karndean flooring in her flat for 12 years and it still looks good as new so we know it is hard wearing. Not being the sort of people who chop and change décor every other year it is a good, long lasting option for us even if it is pricey (though we do get it at cost as a family member runs a flooring business so that cuts the price a bit for us).
