Delivery man tried door handle? Is that normal?

Was expecting a delivery this afternoon and suddenly heard what sounded like someone trying my front door handle once before knocking. Thought for a second it was DP back early but it was the delivery.

AIBU to be surprised he tried to open my front door? Is that normal? If I hadn’t had the door locked would he have just walked in?

Is this a ‘thing’ or was this just a weird delivery?

I came downstairs once and found a parcel in my hall that couldn’t fit through the letterbox so I’m guessing some of them do if they are in a rush.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 12/11/2019 20:54

Yeah, found a delivery man in my lounge once.

No boundaries, some people.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 12/11/2019 20:54

I've read on MN about this happening before. So I do think it's a thing.

Mangobluesky · 12/11/2019 20:55

@Miketv3 just surprised really! Feels like a bit of an invasion of privacy!

I'd be ok with it if I had a porch but still dodgy ground

Mangobluesky · 12/11/2019 20:55

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon haha oh god, what did he say?!

Mangobluesky · 12/11/2019 20:56

@Faez no porch, straight into my living room!

Last Christmas I had an amazon delivery guy who opened the front door, hurled the parcel down the hall and hightailed it back to his van.
Thought he was probably a bit stressed and behind time, can’t be an easy job but it certainly surprised me.

ShetlandWife · 12/11/2019 20:59

Normal in Shetland and presumably other rural communities.

Not normal in cities.

Mangobluesky · 12/11/2019 21:00

@shetlandwife Middle of a city!!

Yep same happened to me the other day. I’m not rural - SE London!

MrsJoshNavidi · 12/11/2019 21:02

Might the driver have been from a culture where this might be normal? Like Wales?

Pardonwhat · 12/11/2019 21:02

Into a porch I wouldn’t think twice about.
Or if a local postie in a rural community I problem wouldn’t think twice about.
Anything else is certainly unusual.

Mangobluesky · 12/11/2019 21:03

Glad it’s not just me - very strange!

From what I hear though, delivery drivers are being really pushed to their limits time wise, so probably going to save a few minutes.

I don't think it will be anything dodgy. (but that could be my naive rural heritage showing Grin)

MyNewBearTotoro · 12/11/2019 21:10

Totally normal where I grew up (rural Wales), our postman would open the back door (never locked even when we were out) and leave post on the kitchen table and we also used to leave stamped addresses letters we needed to post on the table for him to take away with him.

This would be very unusual where I live now (large English city) though and I wouldnt expect it from a random delivery driver, especially if the door leads straight into the house rather than into a porch/ conservatory.

Sciurus83 · 12/11/2019 21:10

Normal for us but we have a porch and Yale lock on the inside door

Sciurus83 · 12/11/2019 21:11

Also this

Omar1986 · 12/11/2019 21:11

No!

Lulualla · 12/11/2019 21:11

All the drivers round here do it. They just pop the parcel in the porch and shut the door behind them. If it's locked then they go round and put it in my garage.

EskewedBeef · 12/11/2019 21:13

Did he perhaps perch the parcel on the handle to free his hand to knock?

applesandacorns · 12/11/2019 21:14

I don't think it's too weird. I rather they do that than leave it on the porch, tbh.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 12/11/2019 21:15

Royal Mail postie did it here several times. I was a bit shocked. I now lock the door.

museumum · 12/11/2019 21:18

I wouldn’t expect them to step inside or even open the door wide but I’ve no objection to them opening it enough to place the parcel inside.

We live on the fourth floor of a block of flats. Anyone wanting us has to buzz up, which is what an Amazon delivery guy did a few weeks ago. We wait until whoever it is knocks on the top door then answer it - but with this chap I didn't need to because he just opened the door, walked through the hall and into the living room and left a parcel on the sofa (top door is usually unlocked if there's someone home).

I was alone in the house at the time and came into the living room (having heard the door opening when I was actually expecting a knock) to find him on his way out (wordlessly, incidentally). The whole thing was pretty unnerving.
