AIBU?

To think someone driving their car round the corner might encourage them to think....

Every morning I leave the house between 6:15 and 7am and every morning, without fail, the engine of a neighbour’s (unoccupied) car is running. It might be a coincidence that they happen to have a schedule exactly the same as mine and only run it for 5 minutes to warm it up! Am I being unreasonable to wish someone would move their car a few hundred feet just so they think twice....? This wouldn’t be me as I’m too much of a chicken (and don’t want to break the law!)

(Additional information for anyone interested - the car is a diesel Range Rover and this is in summer as well as November)

You get idiots like this on the school run, even though they are in the car. I’ve told them that’s it’s illegal to idle an engine before and they look amazed that, big news, it’s terrible for air quality. So clueless. They have kids there too!

Isn’t it illegal anyway ? I hate this just run it for two minutes, if it’s a decent car it shouldn’t need warming up. You don’t get people in Sweden running all their cars for 45 minutes every morning when it’s like minus 25!

The car will have remote start. My car does too and its perfectly legal.

In the cold months I set the car to warm up before we have to get in it. Nice luxury to have and I don't understand your issue with it.

Its not like someone is sat there revving the engine

I think if you’re sat in the car you don’t do it any longer than necessary... every morning it’s running when I walk past it (on my way to public transport) it’s running, be that at 6:15 or 7am.i don’t think it takes 45 minutes to demist a car, particularly in summer.

Apparently, people are goi g to be fined for having engines running in traffic. Maybe they’ll extend it to cars idling on driveways.

No wonder the environment's screwed if people can't even bear being in a cold car whilst it warms up. Won't somebody think of the polar bears!

My neighbour has a visitor that does this... pulls out of a parking space then leaves the car idling in the middle of the car park while he gets his son ready for school - blocking the rest of us in. Thoughtless twat. Next time he does it I might hop in and move it myself.

It's illegal to leave a running engine unattended, and also to let an engine idle unnecessarily on a public road.

Obviously a drive is not a public road. Nonetheless idling is harmful so should only be done for the bare minimum of time needed.

In the specific example given, the OP's neighbour leaves their car idling for long periods, winter and summer.

Actually it also isn’t parked on their drive... but that’s probably for another thread!

In our borough, they would be fined I think. Excessive idling is a massive pollution issue. Call your council. I’d get a few flyers on idling and distribute those to them and their neighbours.

@Alarae Karcher Window Vac gets rid of a lot of the condensation before you set off. Much quicker than waiting for the heat and aircon to shift it. I keep mine in my old car in the winter.
