So I moved departments at work and have been in my current position for 2 years. During these two years, I've not had a contract for said position despite questioning/mentioning it a handful of times. I've been told it's something that's being worked on.

A colleague on my team is leaving and the company is "not in a position to hire someone else as a replacement" and instead said I would take on more responsibility and would be provided with a new title and pay rise with another pay rise due after a 3 month performance review. I am due to get this contract once my colleague leaves, pay rise from December wages onwards.

Now our plan was to start trying for a baby in 2020. But I suddenly feel like if I was to fall pregnant I would be putting strain on the company and it would annoy them? As ridiculous as that sounds?

I also worry that if, on the off chance, I fell pregnant within the 3 month review period, even if my performance was worth the additional pay rise, I doubt it would be given. Because what would be the point in giving me a pay rise if in x amount of months, I'd be going on maternity.
Or would work think less of me that I planned it all along? I know they don't want to hire a replacement and now they're going to have to replace AND pay me SMP.

Do I wait and put trying off for longer to ensure I get this pay rise? Or do I go along with what we planned for the year ahead and whatever happens happens?

Could someone tell me to give my head a shake and that I'm over thinking this??

Demand a contract. Try for a baby. If you get pregnant in the next 3 months, don’t tell them until after your probation review and your bonus.

You are obviously good at your job. You’re an asset to the company.

Live your life. That is all.

Sorry but do you think the company cares about you as an individual? No. So why do you give a toss? Live your life and do what you want when you want with it. You only get one and you shouldn't be living to work. Work should be enabling you to live.

Do exactly what Bluddy says

You need to speak to your union rep/HR as any salary adjustments/pension/maternity pay etc will be judged on your current contractable salary and not necessarily on the grade that you are working at. Protect yourself and get a contract/job description ASAP.

You don't have to tell your employer you're pregnant until you're 25 weeks so even if you were to get pregnant tomorrow, your 3 month review would be well out of the way.

Honestly OP, this is your life. You want to have a baby and you shouldn't have to think about how they will cope without you. If they were to treat you any differently, you are fully protected by the law. Best of luck in your TTC journey and well done on your promotion 🙂

I didn't tell my workplace I was pregnant until nearly 5 months along because I knew they'd pile on the workload if they knew I wasn't going to be around for a year (and they did exactly that, piled on the stress). You can wear certain styles that disguise your bump and if this is your first, you may not show much until the 5 month mark anyway. Also try not to tell the one 'trusted' colleague if you don't want the whole office to know.....
