To put this on my gas fire?

Recently moved into a new house, it has a gas fire with some real coals on it. I've never had a gas fire before, it's lovely and warm but stinks when it's on, it's been checked and is safe but just stinks. It's been on quite a few times so I don't think it's dust, I've vacuumed all the crevices, could I spray a mixture of essential oil and water on it to make it smell nice or is this a big no? Don't want to burn the place down or choke us all!

Big fat no. Dont mess with the coals. They are not real coal, they are made of something else and if sprag anything on themcthats likely to have alcohol in you will get a bit of an explosion. If you really think its the vials, you can buy new ones.

Spray, not sprag

minisoksmakehardwork · 11/11/2019 09:10

Is it a brand new fire? It might need using thoroughly to get rid of the 'new, unused' smell. Maybe put it on for a very long time in a well ventilated room and see if that makes a difference.

No no no. Don't spray anything on a gas fire!

And like a PP if the fire is gas they won't be real coals. Did you ask the person who did the checks about the smell and if there was anything you could do?

Grumpyunleashed · 11/11/2019 09:23

Have you had it serviced by a ‘Gas Safe’ engineer?

Elementalillusions · 11/11/2019 09:26

Definitely do not spray essential oils or anything else onto the gas fire, at best you will damage the fire, at worst you will burn the house down.

It’s possible it’s not been used for a while and that’s why it smells.
Just leave it on for a while with windows open to dissipate the smell and see if it’s any better after a few hours.

revelsandrose · 11/11/2019 09:27

It was checked before we completed just for safety so we didn't know about the smell then.
It's not new, but I don't think it was really used by the previous owners before we moved in.
Is there alcohol in essential oil? I know not to put chemicals on it but thought a spritz of oil in water wouldn't really be that harmful?
I may just buy some new 'coals' then and see if that helps.

Oil is flammable. Do not spray anything on it.

Clangus00 · 11/11/2019 09:34

Would you spray it on the gas ring of a cooker?
No.
So don’t do it on a fire.

PigletJohn · 11/11/2019 10:12

I've seen this, the gasman said the coals were dirty and cleaned them.

You can buy new coals, they have to be arranged in the designed layout.

revelsandrose · 11/11/2019 10:13

Ok I've booked another gas engineer out to service/check it as apparently from googling the coals need to be placed correctly and I have no clue what I'm doing and don't want to kill us all! Thanks for the advice, hadn't actually thought that oil is flammable Blush

It's probably just burning off old dust and hair. Ours used to smell funny when it was first used every winter. Another check can't hurt though, I'd imagine it's nothing much.

bellinisurge · 11/11/2019 10:20

Likely to be dust. My in-laws have the same thing. There's is a relatively new fire but they haven't used it for most of 2019. Stank the room out.

pooopypants · 11/11/2019 10:21

Fuck it, get some Zoflora on it. That 'smells nice'

TabbyMumz · 11/11/2019 11:57

If you look underneath the coals they may have letters under them, then you arrange then kn the corresponding slots in the fire. If it's a new fire they should have left you the instruction booklet which shows the layout. It's not the end of the world though if the layout is slightly wrong, its just to help ventilation. Please dont put zoflora on it....again flammable!
