Hello myself and my partner are visiting Newcastle this weekend - neither of us have been just trying to find out what’s worth seeing/not seeing?

We are late 20s - like cosy pubs (and not so cosy nightclubs), nice food and seeing a bit of the city and surrounding areas. We aren’t too interested in shopping!

Any help would be great - thank you!

How many nights are you there?

I love the Ouseburn pubs - the Kiln and Brinkburn Brewery are next door to one another. It's a bit of a walk to the "main city bars" so would be better for an afternoon or night 1 of 2.

For a daytime walk I'd go down to the quayside, over the Millenium bridge for a visit to the Baltic. Then back over, glass of wine in the Broad Chare, then back along into town, going up the bank towards Grey Street. There's a couple of little shops at the bottom of the bank (near Babuchos) selling Newcastle themed items, good ones rather than tat.

Yy to Lola Jeans for burgers. They also have a branch in Tynemouth so if you get the metro out to Tynemouth, if it's a Sunday, visit the market on the platform, walk down to the seafront then stop for Lola Jeans at the end before metro back to town.

I second Allards in Tynemouth. There's also a restaurant on the beach, between Tynemouth and Cullercoats, with great views of Tynemouth Priory and out to sea.

I'm much older than you, but there seem to be a lot of bars and clubs in Whitley Bay (and the revamped Spanish City is good for food).

Grey Street and the Quayside are good for bars and restaurants - there's a good gin bar on Grey St if that's your thing. Patricia's in Jesmond is a really good restaurant, I've also heard good things about the Biscuit Factory but haven't been there myself.

Apart from the Latin signs in Wallsend, the museum at Segedunum is beginning to look a bit in need of a refresh but is definitely worth a look, and is really close to the Metro.

Walk down to the Quayside from Grey’s Monument, go down DogLeap stairs. Walk along the quay to the Blinking Eye bridge. Visit the Sage on the other side. There’s a Wetherspoons on the Newcastle side, cheap and quite a nice pub, actually. Slightly crazy pub in Monument Mall, the Botanist, good for food. Not the cheapest, but nice, busy.

Agree about the Biscuit Factory art gallery is great. If you want a walk near the centre try Jesmond Den.

Dene not den!

My two favourite pubs in Newcastle are The Forth and The Bridge Tavern. Cosy with great drinks and atmosphere. There is a great gin bar called Pleased To Meet You.

Get on the metro and come to Sunderland 😏😏😁😂😂😂

The Hancock museum is good, and the Discovery museum is also worth a look (and it's close to the train station.)

If you do fancy visiting Sunderland the glass centre is well worth a look as is the Winter Gardens.

I don't drink and don't eat out often so no recommendations there sorry.

South Shields has a beautiful seafront and lighthouse

The market is on on Saturday morning in Tynemouth too so you could do that on Saturday.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/11/2019 20:21

It's never quiet on a Friday and Saturday.

There's a few drinking "areas" so I'd pick one per night.

Ouseburn - kiln, brinkburn brewery, tyne bar
Bigg Market (avoid!!)
Quayside - wetherspoons, colonel porters, tiger Hornsbyand as someone said above, Bridge Tavern
The Gate (avoid!!)
Central - centurian, spoons, revolution, revolution da Cuba

baxterstockman · 10/11/2019 20:35

Kaltur on High Bridge is fantastic! A really authentic Galician tapas place. DH loves Crown Posada if you want a cosy Pub down by the Quayside. Or also the Free Trade. I like the cocktails at Colonel Porters. We live at the Coast and I agree, Tynemouth (and Rileys) is well worth a visit but you may not fit it in. Enjoy your weekend - I moved up here 10 years ago and absolutely love it!

YouTheCat · 10/11/2019 20:42

The Kiln is very expensive.

There are some amazing places to eat in the Grainger Market. If you like burgers ( they do vegan as well), check out Fat Hippo Underground which is across the road from the Theatre Royal.

The Crown Posada on the Quayside is worth a visit.

If you're a bibliophile there is Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children's Books which is also out at Ouseburn

You could book a Victoria Tunnel tour. It's around 8quid pp and is a guided tour down the old ww2 evac chamber.
