www.google.co.uk/amp/s/labourlist.org/2019/11/corbyn-and-rayner-vow-to-open-a-sure-start-centre-in-every-community/%3famp

I had PND. I literally wanted to run away from my baby. I had no idea what I was doing.

One of these places (since massively cut) helped me enormously.

Sure Start was dropped because it was not reaching those who needed it most. Motivated middle class mummies were attending the sessions instead of those parents who needed the support more.

Has Labour said how they plan to rectify this?

Freddiefox · 10/11/2019 12:20

I work in a sure start and they never really worked that well tbh. Some ( not all ) of the people didn’t really need the service and could have easily have gone to the local play group in a church hall, and the people who really needed the service didn’t come because they had so many other things going on in their lives and would often feel it wasn’t quite the right place for them because lots of ‘yummy mummies’ attended.
A more targeted approach for children in need is a much better use of money and users feel more comfortable.

I think just bringing them back without any thought for who uses then and what their needs are is a waste of money and there needs to be a decision on whether the are for targeted child or all children

KenDodd · 10/11/2019 12:21

Yes absolutely. This is the sort of support we can't afford NOT to have.

What a massive waste of money to have to rebuild them, when they could just have been kept.

Just wait until we rejoin the EU!

Drpeppered · 10/11/2019 12:22

Labours 2017 manifesto was fully costed. The conservatives was not.

For those saying ‘but how will they fund this’ I think it’s worth waiting to see the economic plans of all parties and seeing for yourself, rather than repeating the same phrase over and over. It will be interesting to see if Boris has any coatings for all his promises.

Tellmetruth4 · 10/11/2019 12:23

Yes they found over £1billion to give the DUP. BJ also found £35million for the abandoned Garden Bridge project. HS2 has a 5-year delay and the costs has jumped by another £22billion. Brexit has cost the economy £70billion so far. The ‘Get ready for Brexit’ campaign cost £100million. Brexit 50p coins were created then melted down costing millions etc etc but apparently the Tory’s are good with money and we can’t afford Sure Start.

Drpeppered · 10/11/2019 12:24

Also I work for a Children’s services in a local authority, and we have definitely become more stretched since Sure Starts started to close. They did work at preventing some families from getting to a point where SS involvement was needed. I don’t know any social workers or family support workers that wouldn’t openly welcome their reintroduction.

Tellmetruth4 · 10/11/2019 12:25

Forgot about the £50million Grayling wasted on the abandoned ferry contract.

DuckWillow · 10/11/2019 12:27

Hmm some of you need to look at how differently the media spins things.

Not SureStart but Labour are being berated for their plans to increase minimum wage,

Meanwhile the Tories with a similar plan are being feted as visionary.

Don’t be sheep folks.

Read behind the headlines and make sure your vote is at least informed...whoever it’s for.

DullPortraits · 10/11/2019 12:28

You may well be very happy to hear this.. but Labour actually have to make it into government first.. and I don't think this will happen so they can promise what the hell they like as they know they won't need to ever follow through.

DirtyWindow · 10/11/2019 12:29

Great news.

DuckWillow · 10/11/2019 12:29

The Express for example.

To be very happy to hear that Labour will reinstate Sure Start?
Goodnightseamer · 10/11/2019 12:32

I didn't notice any yummy mummies at the surestart centre I went to. They would never have gone to that estate. There were plenty of baby yoga and baby massage classes elsewhere that they were willing to pay for so they didn't need to.

trevthecat · 10/11/2019 12:35

I live in a high poverty area and we still have sure start. In fact we have 7 (I think) children's centres in the town. With my eldest I had pnd and they were amazing, with my youngest I had pre natal depression. They saved my life. They should be everywhere. We're very lucky to still have them here but like I said, it's because so many are struggling here

JustAnotherPoster00 · 10/11/2019 12:46

I'm a lifelong Labour voter who won't be voting for this shower of lazy fuckers that's for sure. Tories have decimated society and Labour's response to that is akin to Tories being mauled by a mouse.

Arent they always lifelong Labours voters, every single 1 of them, weird that huh Hmm

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 10/11/2019 12:55

Well there is many of us around Just

Tellmetruth4 · 10/11/2019 12:55

Grin @JustAnotherPoster00

TriciaH87 · 10/11/2019 13:16

Be heading for another recession if Labour gets in. I personally think both Labour and tories are awful but I would rather not find us going back to a government borrowing far more than we can afford getting us back into a huge amount of debt. That's the only way Corbyn will up hold promises. Then when he loses a second referendum he will be borrowing more at a time of uncertainty and he hasn't a clue where he stands or how to handle it. Better the devil you know.

Ihatesundays · 10/11/2019 13:32

Several of our centres have been converted or sold.
My most local one is still there though. It was very much a mix of yummy mummies and not, which is what they were going for in that centre.

goadyficker · 10/11/2019 13:40

Because middle class women never suffer from PND, domestic abuse etc

OP posts:
CustardOmlet · 10/11/2019 15:51

Having been a first time mum and having excellent support from SS, second time and struggling to find places to take my children after groups were closed and caring for a mother who killed her baby due to post natal psychosis who had limited access to support, I will 100% be supporting Labour with this policy.

ColaFreezePop · 10/11/2019 15:59

@EnFinale the point of SureStart was that it was to develop into different things in different areas. It was not just to help out deprived families.

Like when child benefit was universal and not income dependant, it was a way of convincing everyone to pay into the welfare state as they would at least get something back.

myself2020 · 10/11/2019 16:02

For our region, surestart was very much a middle class SAHM club. only a small group of people were welcome, almost all of them SAHM on their 2nd child, with a well earning husband. everybody else was made to feel very, very unwelcome. good riddance i would say

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 10/11/2019 16:02

As great as their "promises" are, you must ask...

How...
How will they fund it. How will they decide where and when. How long will it take. How, how, how ..

Why is this only applied to Labour policies.
The Tories polices are just a promise to undo what they have created. Lib Dem’s will change their minds and jump into bed with the Tories if that was their option.

Mishappening · 10/11/2019 16:06

Definitely a very good thing - all power to their elbow!

tillytrotter1 · 10/11/2019 16:11

They can say what they 'will do' when they aren't being asked how they'll fund it.
