To want an Amazon Alexa?

Am I? I dream of an organised life where I just shout at someone to add things to my shopping list, they've been out a while now so views welcome.

Will it make my life easier?

Love mine. Use it for timers and alarms, listen to radio, get weather forecasts when we go out, there are quizzes. I have Amazon prime, so get access to a 'trimmed' music selection as part of that. Haven't yet felt the need to pay for a music subscription but might in the future.

I was very anti having one. Now we have 3.Blush

It's great as an intercom so I don't have to shout. Phone finder is useful. And making her burp or fart is funnier than it should be Grin

We have Alexa in every room except the spare bedroom and the bathrooms. She is our intercom, switches on the lights, sets timers, reminders, wakes us up in the morning, gives me recipes, reads me stories, plays the radio, plays me music, tells me the weather forecast and provides information and general amusement. No doubt there is lots of other stuff too, but we haven't got around to it yet.

I went out to the shop today. Alexa was off. Gone 30 mins. Left my dog home alone

Came home to him reclining in his bed with alexa playing him a jazz track.

How?

Turns lights on and off, intercom, reminders, music, audio books, random questions I think off, dd finds it funny to make her fart, games can be a laugh sometimes aswell, weather forecast, alarms, timers. So much she can do, I’m going to order more plugs soon.

YABU.
One of the reasons they’re so cheap is that it gives Amazon access to so much of your data.
Data is the gold of the future and we’re just giving it all away to companies willy nilly.
Don’t be fooled, don’t get one.

FizzyPink · 09/11/2019 23:20

I love Alexa. I’m not a great sleeper and she plays me 30 minutes of rain music as I’m falling asleep and when I wake up in the middle of the night I ask her the time rather than getting out of sleep mode by looking at my phone.
Timers are also very useful and I’m always asking her to order things from amazon as I realise I’ve run out.

BobbyGentry · 09/11/2019 23:27

I put Alexa back in its box. 📦

Not my cup of tea. ☕️

Siri also is switched off too.

Maybe I’m just too old but it’s annoyingly shite and listens in on you!?

Opening our lives to reduced privacy and reduced liberty 🗽 makes me not want to turn my life into an enhanced marketing algorithm.

Just ‘cause I don’t have anything particular interesting to say shouldn’t give amazon or apple the opportunity to take my data.

Also cover cameras on phones and laptops too!

Bleugh bleugh bleugh Alexa and Siri - it’s behind you!

“and when I wake up in the middle of the night I ask her the time rather than getting out of sleep mode by looking at my phone.” Oh I need this!

Time40, you are spot on, unfortunately I know more than I wish to about these devices and it’s shocking
