Vasectomy reversal results

Posting here for traffic

My DH had a reversal last year and as we've not yet fallen pregnant, he sent his semen off for analysis. The results were emailed to us, with a note at the bottom saying to book an appointment to discuss, but we can't get an appointment for 2 weeks. He's got above average sperm count and morphology, but only 10% progressive motility. Does this mean he's infertile? Or have we got a chance? I'm driving myself mad googling trying to find answer.

It sounds like IVF with ICSI might be your best option - it's possible for you to fall pregnant naturally but it might take a long time. How old are you? If you're mid-30s I'd crack on with IVF.

In the meantime, make sure he takes a good multivitamin and lycopene.

Surely ivf is a last resort? I thought it was for people with a low sperm count. His is above average, plus I ovulate regularly, so is there anything we can do to help his sperm swim straight?

@PurpleEllie there are a few things that might help, but 10 per cent motility is very poor.

If he smokes, he needs to stop.
If he regularly drinks over the recommended weekly amount (21 units or 10 pints a week) that also needs to stop.
He should take a good multivitamin, CoEnzyme Q10, and lycopene every day.
Eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg.
Get regular exercise (30 mins 5 times a week).

If he can do all of the above you might not require IVF.

You need to rebook that appointment OP, I'm glad we went to discuss my husband's results, we are 6 months down the line trying.

For vasectomy reversal, we had an amazing success, we had very low chances as the original vasectomy caused massive damage to the tubes (and testicle on one side) and he said he didn't believe the other testicle was functional either. The surgeon said he had to 'bodge' them back together! I fell pregnant 15-17 days after his op. We didn't do the sperm sample as there was no point. For about 2 months before his op, he cut right down on caffeine, drank lots of orange juice (I'd read that it was meant to help sperm) and he took the Wellman Conception tablets as well. Whether that helped or not, I don't know but previous to the vasectomy we tried for 9 months for our 2nd child with no luck, then fell pretty much on the first go after the op.
Wishing you the best of luck with TTC'ing!

I don't have any information I'm afraid, just wanted to wish you luck. Flowers

He doesn't smoke, only drinks about half a bottle over wine over the course of the weekend, and had been taking high dose vit c as I read somewhere that helps with sperm count.
I've heard preseed is good at helping with progressive motility, has anyone here had any success with it?

I think motility is the hardest one to overcome so I agree with others that IVF with ICSO

PurpleFlower1983 · 10/11/2019 21:51

Sorry that was meant to say:

IVF with ICSI might be the best option for you if you’re both in your mid thirties plus.

PurpleEllie · 10/11/2019 22:12

He's got 40% motility, so is technically fertile, just only 10% are swimming straight. IUI looks to be significantly cheaper than ivf, hopefully that will still be an option.

We had a vasectomy reversal with poor motility and looking back I wish we heeded advice to go straight to ivf. Seek good independent advice from you gp or the urologist who gives you reversal results. Good luck xxx

Countryescape · 11/11/2019 05:59

IUI has a much lower success rate than IVF. Don’t waste your money on it.
