What shops are now left for new mums as mothercare is going under & now mamas & papas is closing stores.

Personally I have never shopped at M&P always mothercare. Where are you going to go?

Plus it’s so sad this has happened right before Xmas, it’s always sad/stressful losing jobs but right before Xmas pulls on my heart strings

I had a timehop this week that reminded me of the annoying and exhausting evening when I ended up trying on 7 maternity nighties which all fitted badly in different, unique ways. I bought the least badly fitting ones, but loathed the way they made me feel like a badly squeezed tube of toothpaste. Half the stuff was covered in frigging Winnie the Pooh. I was going to give birth to a baby, not turn into one. The maternity stuff was crap (especially bras) and not designed to comfortably fit women in the third trimester. The shop was close enough to pop into and compare with Babies R Us where I bought quite a few bit of equipment. The tills were always so slow too.

Kiddiecare were good although that was a trek and opened between DS1 & 2. John Lewis was great, but a special trip too.

Babies/ childrens clothes are easily avaliable all over.

Jo Jo Maman Bebe was best for maternity/ nursing clothes. New Look was also surprisingly good.

A good idea to find good independent baby shops (which are often better, anyway) is to look at the website of a brand of pushchair/car seat/cot that you like and check their website for stockists.

Would highly recommend specialist retailers for car seats and pushchairs in particular. The other stuff it doesn't much matter where you buy it from, and supermarkets or online do pretty well here.

List of car seat specialists:

(Some stock prams etc as well)

It has always been hugely overpriced compared to other shops and it’s not as though the quality is any better. I’ve never walked into a Mothercare store feeling like I’ve come away with a fantastic bargain or even really amazing items... Clothing wise the only range I actually liked is the Little Bird Jools Oliver range, the rest has always been so lacklustre.

It’s a shame for the staff but I think Mothercare really had it coming.

It's a shame. Mine went massively downhill. I popped in to ask advice about car seats and the assistant was rude and impatient. Sue basically told me, when I asked what what be the next best step as my son could potentially outgrow his RF car seat (he's 2) was to put him FF with a seatbelt Hmm

Its awful to see it go, but it was expensive and the quality for clothes was massively hit and miss, especially for the prices.

I also bought my Silver Cross pram and left a review saying it's pretty and easy to use but wouldn't buy again if I were to have to get another, for various reasons. Mothercare deleted my review when they went into administration and two glowing reviews have taken it's place!
