To not want a second independence referendum?

glitterytrainers · 09/11/2019 08:52

Can I just ask if there are any Scottish people on here who have a burning urge for a second independence referendum? If Nicola Sturgeon gets here way and makes a pact with Jeremy Corbyn she is asking for another referendum next year. Now I voted for independence the last time but I have absolutely no appetite to change anything - the decision was made by a democracy and it should stay that way. Would it not be better to put the money used for these ridiculous campaigns into schools, hospitals, anything. I have never spoken to anyone in Scotland who has shown the slightest interest in any referendum.

Have you not seen the coverage of the huge independence marches?

We were told that the only way to stay in the EU was to vote no but we're being dragged out anyway despite the country voting to remain.

Have you not see the videos of all the MPs walking out as the SNP started to speak? They were all about the union of equals until the vote went through then Scotland were ignored again.

YABU. Things have changed since 2014. I don't buy this idea that referendums are a once in a lifetime thing, when we can have general elections every couple of years.

Oldbutstillgotit · 09/11/2019 09:26

@glitterytrainers I am Scottish , voted No last time , still No and absolutely dread the thought of Indyref2. 2014 was such a divisive time .
Apart from DH and his family I know of no one who is desperate for another referendum. General view is that the SG/SNP needs to sort out schools, massive drug problems in cities such as Dundee , NHS etc . They have no answer about currency and other vital details .
Tin hat on !

Oldbutstillgotit · 09/11/2019 09:28

@ NoHummus because we were told it was a once in a generation event ! A generation isn’t 5 years

StreetwiseHercules · 09/11/2019 09:28

I definitely want one. The promises made in the run up to the last one have been broken and I have no desire to be governed by Boris Johnson and his spiritual successors down a little Englander path of insular failure.

Scotland is a medium sized country with world class assets and first world infrastructure who’s population have political views diametrically opposed to anything Westminster can provide.

We should always have the option of choosing independence.

NoHummus · 09/11/2019 09:32

@Oldbutstillgotit My point is that policies change, parliamentary makeup changes, people change their minds. So we should be allowed to vote again on important issues like independence and Brexit.

UhareFouxisci · 09/11/2019 09:42

YABU - the indy ref result was so strongly influenced by Scottish people being told they had to vote no to stay in the EU, whereas in fact if they had voted yes, and then successfully negotiated EU membership which would be in everyone's interests for them to maintain to avoid there being a damaging land-border with a non-EU country, they would be much better off now. The Brexit situation is such a dramatic change in the landscape that the indy ref decision is null and void.

PiggyPlumPie · 09/11/2019 09:46

YANBU and am sick of being told that I voted no to stay in the EU. Nobody but me knows why I voted why I did.

Youseethethingis · 09/11/2019 09:53

We can’t Brexit and Scexit then unBrexit and unScexit every 5 years though. It’s fundamentally different from changing the government.
Still don’t understand how people think the problems of leaving a trading bloc we’ve been part of for less than 50 years are insurmountable but somehow breaking up one of the oldest countries in the world will be pretty straightforward.

Clavinova · 09/11/2019 10:08

Looks certain to be a very divisive campaign according to the Scottish polls - click on 'line' and 'table' as well;

My worry is that all of the politicians are not the least concerned about the people of the UK but are more interested in their own agenda and notoriety - if they are all in it to help people pay them minimum wage and see how many of them hang around. If we leave the UK there is no certainty we would be allowed to be part of the EU in any event.
