AIBU to think children shouldn’t be playing in the dog park?

Took my dog to the local dog park this afternoon. It’s the only area nearby where dogs are allowed to be off leash. There are two parts to the dog park - one is a huge field, the other is an adjoining smaller field with some agility stuff - tunnel, bridge, poles etc. Took my dog into this area as he loves to play on the equipment. Just after we arrived a woman came in to this area with with a GSD puppy and 3 kids who looked to be about 5-8 ish. The kids immediately began to run around and play on the agility stuff. The puppy was running around but not anywhere near the kids. Mum was ignoring them all, until another woman with similar aged child and a staffie-type dog also arrived. The mothers chatted, the other two dogs played together and the four kids were running around on the equipment. No one paid any attention to what the kids or dogs were doing for the most part. My dog wanted to play on the agility stuff but couldn’t get on it. One of the kids got a plastic baseball ball from his mother and started swinging it around, hitting the tunnel etc. One of the girls screamed when my dog walked past her. He’s gentle and friendly but he is a giant breed so could knock a child over if startled. The kids were sitting on the bridge and crawling through the tunnel- if he jumped on to the bridge he could easily have bumped one of them off it.

I felt my dog was starting to get stressed so I left. I felt the situation had the potential to become dangerous, especially with the baseball bat.

The dog park is in a rural area, all on its own, surrounded by thousands of acres of public open space. The nearby town, about four miles away, has parks and play parks galore. AIBU to think children shouldn’t be playing in an area that is meant exclusively for dogs? Fine if they were actually playing with their dogs, but they were completely ignoring them!

They would be the first to yell if the kids got hurt too...

I get that not everyone wants dogs in areas where kids play...so stay out of the dog park that has been provided to stop that happening...yadnbu

I agree with you, especially as some kids get nervous around boisterous dogs

KellyHall · 08/11/2019 23:51

YANBU

But, if the people you saw live near-by and have both children and dogs, they're probably quite restricted because dogs aren't allowed in children's play parks and they can't just leave the children at home to walk the dogs.

KinderGirl · 08/11/2019 23:57

YANBU the reason they have dog parks deprecate from children’s parks! Seems odd she lets her children play like that around dogs she doesn’t know. Not even a quick word “is he okay with children? “ for example he’s not easily startled is he?

RightYesButNo · 09/11/2019 00:33

Of course YANBU. @coldwarenigma is spot on about them being the first to yell if the children got hurt, and on the other hand, if the equipment got damaged, as it’s designed for dogs, I’m sure she wouldn’t take any responsibility for letting her children damage it. Typical. I’m really confused how anyone could think YABU (vote was at 24% YABU, then 21, now 18, so at least it seems to be going the right direction). Can someone who actually thinks that explain?

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 09/11/2019 00:45

Can someone who actually thinks that explain?

That will be from some who think that dogs and their owners will never be right and will disagree with anything a dog owner says. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think the woman was a dick and would have advised her that I was about to let my large dog play on the agility course, in case her children would get frightened. It sounds a lot better than, get your children out off the dig agility but and take them to the playground, you lazy fuck.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 09/11/2019 00:45

Lots of spelling mistakes. Sorry.

Procrastination4 · 09/11/2019 00:45

The clue is in the title-it’s a DOG park. You are not being unreasonable at all.

LatinLanguage · 09/11/2019 02:48

Glad others think the same as me! This is not a situation I’ve encountered before - I’ve seen kids there before but they’ve always been older and walking around with their parents rather than playing independently. It just seemed dangerous and quite selfish, especially as there’s so much space round about for them to play in.

Totally agree, people can't see past themselves. I feel the same way about parents who follow around toddlers in the big kids playgrounds tutting and slowing down bigger kids or their 3 year old needing to scoot skate ramps and glaring at teens who have very few places to go and especially exercise.

littleorangecat22 · 09/11/2019 03:35

Agree. Kids shouldn’t be there, and if they are there, should not be running around playing.

MrsCasares · 09/11/2019 16:17

Yadnbu. It’s a dog park for dogs. Don’t know who would vote any other way.

ferrier · 09/11/2019 16:20

It's not unreasonable for the kids to be in there unless there's a sign saying they shouldn't. But they should be supervised with an awareness that the dogs have priority.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/11/2019 16:25

For years people have complained that kids only get small sections of parks cordoned off, and no/very few (weird, selfish, twats) dog owners use those spaces.

Now small dog agility parks are springing up and... well, whodah thunk it?

I'd have had to say something. Prpbably "How long will you be here? I'll come back when you have finished!" cos I am chicken. Though shold there ever ybe a pak loke that for my dog I might be braver on his behalf Grin

missyB1 · 09/11/2019 16:30

I would have let my dog on the equipment and raised hell if any of the kids upset her! And I would have given them short shrift if any of them moaned about my dog playing there.
Mind you I’m getting bolshy in my old age Grin
