To ask what really annoys you at work?

My Manager is great, I sit right next to her so she gets to hear me go to her when I’m annoyed with things. I have two main gripes at work.

  1. When a member of a team chooses to come up to my desk, laptop in hand with an IT issue that they know needs to be sent via ticket. However they’re too lazy to do it so expect me to stop what I’m doing to submit the ticket for them. My Manager tries to put a stop to this when she’s around but when she’s not they take advantage.

  2. This one is a constant argument with me and my Manager. When I e-mail someone, without a high importance flag, it usually means it’s something that isn’t requiring an urgent response and I’d expect the person to reply via email as that was my original method of communication. However I’ve found that recruitment agencies we work with specifically, I send an email and they will call me. Every time. Just to ask a random question that they could’ve emailed. My Manager thinks I should answer the phone, but 9/10 I don’t as then they’ll expect me to be constantly available for a chat. That one is probably unreasonable on my part but really annoys me.

So everyone else, on a Friday night after a long week at work, what’s your annoyances at work?

I've taken over a team and their entrenched ideas how tjings should be done because it's always been done that way.

Well knock me sideways, I have an actual clue about business and this isn't the way to make a profit. So you can accept my changes to make a profit or you can fuck off and be managed out but please don't give me your sob story about why you've done the role for the sane hours on the same day for 15 years and no-one has ever challenged you about it.

People that really hate their job, they hate their desk, hate their colleagues, hate the company.

But don't leave!

They don't move on! 5 years later they are all still there!

If you want to stay then suck it up, no complaining, no moaning, smile and pretend you like it like the rest of us do! 👊

DragonontheWagon · 08/11/2019 23:01

And clearly I've typed spelling errors, must put my glasses on on MN 🙄

thecatschampagne · 08/11/2019 23:03

@Solongtoshort people who say things like that are maybe just trying to help you develop or see a different way of doing things? People who react badly to constructive criticism or feedback are a bit of a peeve of mine.

TDMN · 08/11/2019 23:05

We have this thing at our place where quite a people:
A. Dont make any notes when they are trained on stuff, so when it does come up they just say they cant do it as they were trained so long ago (we're not talking brain surgery, more like exporting an excel file, then attaching to an email kinda stuff)
B. Never refer to the extensive, very user friendly for even the un-techiest of people reference library of notes that we also provide that would enable them to complete the task.
C. Take zero ownership over retaining information needed to complete their job and instead hound the SME's with the same questions all the bloody time.

And breath Grin

CurbsideProphet · 08/11/2019 23:08

"Let's all cascade this information. "

"Let's do a round table and introduce ourselves. "

"Let's use all this ridiculous corporate made up language even though we're a 3rd sector organisation. "

DragonontheWagon · 08/11/2019 23:10

I forgot accountability, what the fuck happened to people being accountable?

I'm looking at you my team, especially my supporting supervisor. Where the actual fuck is your accountability, I'm just going back on Monday to repeatedly smash myself against a wall until I get someone to own their shit.

BombayPotatoes4 · 08/11/2019 23:18

The inflexibility of part time employees.

The people who have been there longer than you have been alive and still can't grasp how to copy and paste!

The people who have been there longer than you have been alive and still can't grasp how to copy and paste! 'I'll just type it, it'll be quicker' Confused

Firefliess · 08/11/2019 23:23

Can you remove your phone number from your email footer OP? That would solve one of your problems.

The thing I like least is one of the people I manage who when she reaches a problem just gives up and throws it back at me without even attempting to find a solution.

Babyroobs · 08/11/2019 23:24

Incompetent colleagues who have been doing the job years longer than me but still give wrong advice. Colleagues suddenly starting talking in Gujarati when it's something they don't want me to overhear or just want a private joke, colleagues stinking of fags etc.

Redcliff · 08/11/2019 23:27

Dragon - so true. My favourite thing that happened recently was a compliance issue (that I identified as a potential risk and came up with a solution to 6 months ago and my manager decided not to implement) came to pass. My manager went nuts giving the admin person that inadvertently caused the breach a really hard time and saying to me "how could they be so foolish ". He insisted on an audit and low and behold he had done exactly the same thing a couple of months ago! How me and the admin team laughed.

madcatladyforever · 08/11/2019 23:28

People at work I don't even know who send me facebook friend requests then get the massive hump when I decline. I have all those privacy settings on for a reason, I don't want you to know anything whatsoever about my personal life.

Oh...so many things. The dickwad that I call sick note as they ALWAYS ( &
I mean ALWAYS) phones is sick for at least two days after an annual leave break.
The hypocrisy of working for an LA
I actually love my job and most of the team. But it does grate when I go in on my day off to do / catch up on my actual work as I've been covering for SICKNOTE

Trying to book a meeting with about 15 people. Everyone's calendars look clear but one person comes back to say they're out of the office but haven't blocked it out yet, so you need to find another day. Rinse and repeat 🤯 I'm introducing a new rule that if you say you can't make it but want to come, you have to find another time that suits everyone...

Parkmama · 08/11/2019 23:36

Getting constantly stuck in the middle between my peers and my team, both sides moaning about the other to me . . . I feel like I have 20 kids!!! Confused

Solongtoshort · 08/11/2019 23:37

thecatschampange l don’t mind constructive criticism.

What l do mind is when l have been doing my job along time and l am doing it perfectly well and these comments come.

For context it’s not just me it’s aimed at the person who does it does it to everyone and would be more productive if she minded her own business and done her own job which usually lands on others to do because of not minding her own business.

I wish her manager would deal with her productivity.

chesterfuckingdraws · 08/11/2019 23:39

The people with 5 months service telling me with 15 years service how to do my job

People asking me a question, then ask a colleague the same question because they didn't like my correct answer

My dept manager who can't/won't deal with my team manager who is, literally, incapable of doing his job and is clueless about my role/responsibilities

The fact I'm still waiting to have holidays authorised 11months after submitting the request

Rainbowqueeen · 08/11/2019 23:46

All the managers at my work who simply say you can’t change people when talking about the problem people

By problem people I mean the guy who disappears for 2 hours a day, the woman who takes a weeks sick leave immediately after any holiday she takes, the people sitting doing the crossword or surfing the net for hours a day and refuse to help anyone out because it’s not their role.

Obviously I also don’t like those people.
Currently job hunting as the managers will never change

VaguelySkeletal · 08/11/2019 23:48

Managers who are control freaks and micro-manage. Particularly when their interference causes more problems than it solves!

And Teflon managers who swerve responsibility.

Brooksey5 · 08/11/2019 23:50

Everyone at my work has suddenly started doing a load of exercise together.

There’s a Running Club a football club, basketball and netball. People can do a different sport almost every day after work. Which means I get asked every bloody day if I’m going. I’m not physically able and it pisses me off. Even if they stop bugging me I have to listen to them bug everyone else who hasn’t succumb yet.

Then there’s the cliquey WhatsApp groups that come with all the sporting activities 🙄

Brooksey5 · 08/11/2019 23:52

The inflexibility of work bugs me too. We’re all professionals who do a lot of unpaid over time yet there is zero flexibility on working hours.
