Everyone's talking about Jamie

First of all apologies, for posting here. Has anyone seen 'there's something about Jamie'. I'm asking as I'm thinking of bringing my 8 year old with me to see it? I've read on the description but it say parental discretion advised some strong language....he's seen adult shows at theatre before with occasional adult references- what do people think?

We saw it last week.
There are lots of references to being gay and words like tits. Several "fucks" etc.

It was very funny, really enjoyed it

chezbot · 08/11/2019 21:05

Lovely show. Wonderful message. I'd have no qualms about taking an 8yo

BookWitch · 08/11/2019 21:06

Just to add there weren't any children in the audience under about 14-15ish.

Gobbychops · 08/11/2019 21:07

Agree it’s a great show but does contain bad language.

Figgygal · 08/11/2019 21:10

I haven't seen it yet though I'm going in May

I went to see an officer and a gentleman last year and there was a child of no more than around eight sat in front of us during scenes of simulated sex and quite a lot of swearing it was just so inappropriate and I felt mightily uncomfortable that she was there

Does it have recommended ages on the website a lot of shows do nowadays

Biscuitsneeded · 08/11/2019 21:11

I took my son in previews when he was 12 and he loved it. If you're not too bothered about swearing I think it would be OK but some of the jokes might go over his head. It's a great show though.

MrsJamin · 08/11/2019 21:12

Depends what you think about drag culture, I for one can't stand the appropriation of women and so wouldn't see it. I can't imagine the subject material is suitable for children either.

VanyaHargreeves · 08/11/2019 21:12

I really enjoyed it but obviously themes about homophobia and isolation and lots of swearing

It might be of interest to watch Jamie : Drag Queen At 16

Because that's what they based it on, and it's on iPlayer right now

chezbot · 08/11/2019 21:13

I think the saucier elements of the Jamie script would likely go over an 8yo's head tbh. My ten year old niece came with us and loved it

SouthWestmom · 08/11/2019 21:20

This keeps
Coming up as amazing on Facebook groups I'm in.
I'm surprised as I dislike drag and I'm not sure if this is a transgender or drag play.

BookWitch · 08/11/2019 21:27

It's just about drag, no transgender issues

OrangeSlices998 · 08/11/2019 21:31

It’s drag and not even that much, it’s more about self acceptance and coming out, I loved the show! Depending on how open you are with your 8 year old it might okay. I second watching the documentary, it’ll give you a good idea.

SouthWestmom · 08/11/2019 21:35

Thank you for clarifying. Hate drag and all it represents so will give it a miss

LucyFox · 08/11/2019 21:35

I think 8 is too young for this one - definitely more 12+

LizzieVereker · 08/11/2019 21:36

I thought it was dreadful.

Interestedwoman · 08/11/2019 22:06

'words like tits. Several "fucks" etc.'

I wouldn't take a child to that.

Babyroobs · 08/11/2019 22:07

We are going to see it next year and are taking my 14 year old. not sure I'd take a child under 12.

manicinsomniac · 08/11/2019 22:12

I love the show but I wouldn't take an 8 year old, no.

A lot of musicals in this vein are 12+ as a recommendation.

Gizmo79 · 08/11/2019 22:12

Wouldn’t be keen myself, but I’m not into drag personally.

GunpowderGelatine · 08/11/2019 22:14

@MrsJamin I 100% agree. I started a thread recently asking for recommendations about west end shows and a few people mentioned this, however one look at the trailer I knew I'd hate it. Can't stand drag, it's men parodying women in a mocking and degrading way, how is this inspiring?!

Boom45 · 08/11/2019 22:14

I saw it in Sheffield first time around and thought it was amazing. I'd take an 8year old, but I'm pretty laid back about bad language with my kids.

WishITookLifeSeriously · 08/11/2019 22:25

I'm quite laid back about swearing and mature themes but I think 8 is too young. My 11 year old musical theatre loving dd loves the show but I can't imagine letting her see it three years ago!

AgeShallNotWitherHer · 08/11/2019 22:52

I saw it and loved it - but I wouldn't take an 8 year old.

Not so much the swearing but the a lot of the other stuff would go over his head. Then really all he is seeing is some dancing and some clowning. The deeper stuff is what made it worth seeing.

TheRealKimmySchmidt63 · 08/11/2019 22:55

All replies really appreciated he does love a theatre but I think based on comments I'll go alone he's been through the f"£;k stage - and come out the other end - not to be revisited again!!!

Whatever one's feelings about 'drag culture', I for one was delighted to watch a joyful show with the very clear message that putting on high heels and make up does not in any way make a boy a girl, or a man a woman.
