To think this would be wasting a GP's time?

I'm a bit overweight after two children and not really watching what I eat. I recently got a raise at work so I decided to treat myself to a gym membership, I've just been to the introductorary session today.

I'd basically never stepped foot in a gym before so to avoid embarassment, I opted to have the introductorary session where they tell you how everything works. Well once we were done the woman said that she had to tell me that I need to consult a GP before beginning any fitness program. All the machines have labels on saying this too.

I'm guessing this is just to cover them in case something were to happen, so they can say 'well we do tell you to consult a GP first', but AIBU to think it would be a massive waste of their time unless you have any pre existing medical conditions?

Bump- I'm feeling a bit guilty because I assured the lady that I'd consult a GP, but I really don't think there's a need to!

Yanbu.

I would use your common sense.

Diabetic/very very overweight/unsure of your own limits/existing medical conditions then yes obviously consult a GP.

I would just take it easy and build up to things slowly.

OP, all gyms are required to say that, but, unless you're over 400 pounds or have a chronic condition, it's up to you, really.

Unless you’re really morbidly obese or have underlying health issues I wouldn’t waste the GPs time.

If you have any health issues that might affect or be affected by you going to the gym then yes, consult the gp.

I’m not really sure what they’re expecting the GP to say
Unless you’re unwell, I wouldn’t go to the doctor and take up their time. it’s hard enough to get an appointment when you’re ill without gyms sending people to the GP before they start exercising 🙄. So definitely YANBU

It's a ganfyd. Total waste of time.

Did they take your BP. As part of the induction? If not then at the very least I would, as a HCP, advise you to book in with a practice nurse for a BP check to confirm it’s okay for you to continue.
They are just covering themselves but neither them, or your family, want you to drop down dead when you step on a treadmill for the first time in decades.
NOT a gp app though.
Well done you for getting started in the gym.

I think it's just arse covering. Over here they get you to do this questionnaire and then only if it highlights an issue do you check with a doctor <a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.csep.ca/CMFiles/GAQ_CSEPPATHReadinessForm_2pages.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjsz76cq9vlAhV4ErkGHYXmAHEQFjATegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw2bxwZvWM28wnSOhhLxZKw8" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.csep.ca/CMFiles/GAQ_CSEPPATHReadinessForm_2pages.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjsz76cq9vlAhV4ErkGHYXmAHEQFjATegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw2bxwZvWM28wnSOhhLxZKw8
