Devices and headphones

Just wondering if I'm being unreasonable here. So as not to dripfeed I am far from a perfect parent - single mum to 7 yr old DD and definitely don't expect children to be seen and not heard but....

Sitting in a cafe working (I often wfh). Nice quiet atmosphere, jazz music playing, people tapping away on laptops and... A child watching something repetitive on a device (along the lines of baby shark), no headphones and loud.

Last week travelled by plane with DD and as we got on someone had Peppa pig on at full volume! I am actually surprised that people still do this and don't think it might be disturbing to other people.

Fwiw I got DD some Bluetooth ones for about a tenner but you can get Bud earphones in £1 land (I get my own there) or for about a fiver larger over head ones.

I can't see that there is any situation where a child can not wear headphones rather than subject others to Peppa Pig etc.

Yes I'm trying to work in this cafe so feeling a bit grumpy but I don't think I'm being U!

YANBU but no-one who does this cares.

priceofprogress · 08/11/2019 12:12

Of course YANBU. It’s incredibly rude to think it’s acceptable to play videos/music loudly when other people are around.

attillathenun · 08/11/2019 12:17

YANBU - totally anti-social and annoying regardless of who does it.

giggleshizz · 08/11/2019 12:18

Thank you.

No I didn't think I was being U but yet here we are, I find myself subjected to people's devices on a weekly basis so must be people out there thinking it is perfectly acceptable.

Was in a restaurant last week when someone was watching YouTube or similar without headphones, an adult.

No I dont think you're being unreasonable about the noise on the plane but was the noise in the cafe louder than a group of people having a chat in a cafe? The cafe isnt a working space, I'd expect noise from staff and customers in a cafe.

I've a bit of a bug bear about customers working in cafes, the ones I've dealt with whilst working in a cafe have taken over large tables with their work, ordered precious little over a few hours and have been a bit keen on shooting dirty looks and hurumphing at other customers who have the temerity to come in with some friends, order a decent amount of food/drink and have a chat.

YANBU. I had the plane scenario last week too, but also one worse: spent 8.5 hours in A&E waiting room, as well as the usual toddlers/peppa pig combo, I had two grown women watching something loud and laughing their heads off. I can maybe forgive toddlers but adults doing it? Naaah.

NurseButtercup · 08/11/2019 12:29

YANBU but I always assume that parents have purchased headphones ad infinitum, due to child repeatedly losing/breaking said headphones, leading to parent refusing to repurchase headphones. Sadly the rest of us have to bear the consequences of this decision. Solution: wear my own noise cancelling headphones or move from earshot of noisy device.

7Worfs · 08/11/2019 12:32

YANBU. It’s shitty parenting.
I still remember my mother stopping me from being a nuisance to the general public, 30 years on.
It’s probably the most useful lesson she taught me.

TheSecretJeven · 08/11/2019 12:35

Its annoying but no worse than someone Skyping in an office without headphones so you hear both sides of the conversation Hmm.

giggleshizz · 08/11/2019 12:39

@implants I hear what you are saying and can see both sides as I have frequented more cafes than I care to remember with DD.

If I choose to work from a cafe which I do say twice a week I usually buy lunch and at least one coffee. I have no issues with real life happening around me eg chatting and kids laughing etc and avoid giving out dogs arse mouth looks.

However, still think common decency is loud devices should not be used in public places - adult or child.
