Who gets the Christmas advent calendar?

Minor issue but would you be bothered if another family member, like your mum or mil got your children a Christmas advent calendar? Do you see it as your thing to get your DC. Or are they allowed more than one and get a few from different family members?

Mine get one from grandad and one from us, so two simple chocolate ones, we don’t get any of the ones where it’s a toy a day or anything like that though

ActualHornist · 08/11/2019 12:03

No I wouldn’t be bothered at all.

But they’re so cheap now it’s not worth her posting them!

Gertie75 · 08/11/2019 12:04

Wouldn't bother me although I'd probably keep them in the utility room so there weren't several calendars hanging around the kitchen.

My dd's are still young and so the Elf on the Shelf turns up with it on December 1st.

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 08/11/2019 12:04

I always buy mine an advent calendar but most years they end up with at least one more from various grandparents. Can’t get worked up about it tbh - the chocolates are so small and they’re great bribes for getting ready for school/putting uniform away/eating veg etc! I do have 3 children though so I am a bit over the PFB thing Wink

ASandwichNamedKevin · 08/11/2019 12:06

I think it's nice if grandparents buy one too, assuming you will allow the DC more than one sweet per day.
I know we had more than one as children, it was exciting.
Now I want a beauty advent calendar rather than chocolate!

Bluewavescrashing · 08/11/2019 12:08

My mum provides small gifts to go inside our felt advent calendar. I gladly let her do it- one less job for me!

SleepingStandingUp · 08/11/2019 12:09

I couldn't get my knickers in a twist about someone buying something nice for my child

sweeneytoddsrazor · 08/11/2019 12:10

I just want somebody to buy me the gin advent calendar Grin

Jeds55 · 08/11/2019 12:10

I would like dd to have just 1 as who needs more really but not annoyed that her great nan will get her one also. We get a non chocolate one (pictures are better) and they get her a choc one. She's not even 2 tho so we will eat most of the chocolate

Jeds55 · 08/11/2019 12:11

More annoyed at mil having santa presents at hers also but that's another thread...

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/11/2019 12:15

I don't mind overall, but I do wish my DM had asked before buying the Lego ones so I could have pointed out that DD1 would prefer HArry potter over City... But I know that's slightly ungrateful (I'm probably going to get her the HP one myself and give city to DH as I know DD won't say anything, but will be jealous of her sisters Friends one)

Mumdiva99 · 08/11/2019 12:19

i sometimes get a little irritated when this happens. Only because they don't need more than one. But it's done with the best of intentions so not worth getting het up about. Now I sometimes ask - 'mum - I'm not asking you to but, do you plan to get the calenders? Just so we don't duplicate....'

mummumumumumumumumumum · 08/11/2019 12:21

My children get an advent calendar from my DM. it is a felt one that has choc and present alternating, they only get it up to the age of 10 though (at one point i think she was doing 7 or 8 at the same time and it got too much!) and they still get a choc one from us too.

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 08/11/2019 12:24

I do a homemade one and my mum buys them one, one year it was lego/playmobil, this year it's chocolate. Until this year she has always bought me one too so I'm not complaining!!

Thegoodandbadlife · 08/11/2019 12:38

Always been a tradition that my Grandparents got us our advent calendar. Fondly remember going off with them on a little trip to get one and being sent one up whilst at Uni! Guess it depends though on the individual family. There’s plenty of other things you could do. My parents would always take us to chose a tree decoration every year!

stickerqueen · 08/11/2019 12:41

my mum buys a chocolate one for each kid.

dd has always had a felt on from us that we fill with little toys.

Last year in the sales i picked up some wooden advent calandars to use this year just need to find something to fill them.

I remember when dd was little one year she had 4 calandars

Slappadabass · 08/11/2019 13:42

I make one that I fill with small sweets and I buy a character one too, sometimes family get them one too, usually my nanna.

It's such a minimal amount of chocolate it really doesn't matter if they get a couple, it's really not something worth getting your knickers in a twist about.

Spanglybangles · 08/11/2019 14:40

I have an advent box calendar with individual drawers that I got from the Disney store years ago and always fill it with chocolates of the kids choosing, 2 in each drawer so they get one each every day. MIL gets them each one of the supermarket chocolate calendars each year. They are delighted with 2 chocolate sources every morning!

tillytrotter1 · 08/11/2019 14:46

Is there any subject over which people on here don't get het up???? It's no wonder that so many people seem to have problems.

Jeezoh · 08/11/2019 14:49

Nope, a family member buys ours and it’s fine by me. It gives them pleasure to do it and saves me a few quid. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a non issue.

Ragwort · 08/11/2019 14:53

Agree it’s a total non issue, my DM bought my DS one of those felt advent calendars with little decorations that we reused each year. A couple of years ago (he was about 14 Blush), she had great fun adding different things to each pocket - mostly coins, some real, some chocolate but also messages such as ‘£5 if you clean Grandma’s car’ or a pack of stamps ‘for your thank you letters’. She is very imaginative Smile.
