Work Christmas party - alcohol budget

LolaLollypop · 07/11/2019 10:46

We've had our work Christmas lunch/party email come through recently. The cost is £25 including alcohol. I'm currently pregnant so obviously not drinking. AIBU to request a discount? Some of the people in my team are big drinkers and I feel a bit annoyed at paying the same as someone who is going to easily sink a bottle wine or 6 beers themselves.

Or should I just swallow it up with Christmas spirit and pay the same as everyone else?

I initially misread your email and thought you were asking for a refund from a paid-for event! Grin

But as you have to pay the it's worth a polite ask, even better if you are not the only one.

But I suspect the deal is done and you'll have to swallow it. You don't want to get labelled as "that one"!

"Email"?

I meant "OP"! Grin

What’s included for the £25? Won’t it just be a glass of wine with dinner and then people pay their own?

Dita73 · 07/11/2019 10:58

Just pay it. It’s only £25 and it’s not worth the aggravation or possibly being seen as a bit of a tight arse just to get a few quid off

WaterSheep · 07/11/2019 10:58

I feel a bit annoyed at paying the same as someone who is going to easily sink a bottle wine or 6 beers themselves.

Will this really be possible for just £25? Surely for £25 there will be a limit on the amount of alcohol provided?

MrsMaiselsMuff · 07/11/2019 10:59

I'm a non drinker and wouldn't ask for a discount. The cost has already been calculated and someone will need to pay the difference if you don't.

Pardonwhat · 07/11/2019 10:59

If £25 includes all the evenings drinks then it’s clearly just a subsidiary at the loss of the company. However I suspect it’s to include maybe a glass of wine and then everyone’s on their own after that.
£25 for a meal at Christmas with no drinks is still a bargain.
Personally I wouldn’t moan.

Celebelly · 07/11/2019 10:59

I can't imagine much booze is included for that, unless it's very heavily subsidised! If it's just a glass of fizz on arrival or something then it wouldn't really bother me. Last year I was pregnant for my old work's do and they did try to stop me paying an equal share on the night as they'd had wine etc, but I didn't really grudge it for the sake of a few quid and the hassle of being 'that person'.

Ffsnosexallowed · 07/11/2019 11:00

Does the £25 cover all alcohol? Is it subsidised by the company? Initial thoughts are yabu

Celebelly · 07/11/2019 11:01

And if it's a free bar situation paid for by company
then I wouldn't ask for anything off either. Some people might have one glass, some might have loads, some might have none, that's just the way these things work.

LolaLollypop · 07/11/2019 11:17

It just says "including alcohol" on the email.
Ok maybe i am being a bit Scrooge about it Grin
I'll just eaten double what everyone else does!

How much alcohol do they get? If it's just one I wouldn't bother saying anything

BigFatLiar · 07/11/2019 11:18

If its a drink at the start and with the meal there's usually an alcohol free alternative and they're often cost as much as the wine.

JasonPollack · 07/11/2019 11:52

Have a second pudding just to make sure you're getting your moneys worth Grin

helpasisterout · 07/11/2019 12:31

Most set menu meals are way more than £25 so I would say it's still cheap if it's a sit down meal so just pay it. I would double check however that they do have some nice soft drinks for you not just a warm Diet Coke!
