Work Christmas party - alcohol budget

We've had our work Christmas lunch/party email come through recently. The cost is £25 including alcohol. I'm currently pregnant so obviously not drinking. AIBU to request a discount? Some of the people in my team are big drinkers and I feel a bit annoyed at paying the same as someone who is going to easily sink a bottle wine or 6 beers themselves.

Or should I just swallow it up with Christmas spirit and pay the same as everyone else?

I initially misread your email and thought you were asking for a refund from a paid-for event! Grin

But as you have to pay the it's worth a polite ask, even better if you are not the only one.

But I suspect the deal is done and you'll have to swallow it. You don't want to get labelled as "that one"!

Just pay it. It’s only £25 and it’s not worth the aggravation or possibly being seen as a bit of a tight arse just to get a few quid off

Will this really be possible for just £25? Surely for £25 there will be a limit on the amount of alcohol provided?

I'm a non drinker and wouldn't ask for a discount. The cost has already been calculated and someone will need to pay the difference if you don't.

If £25 includes all the evenings drinks then it’s clearly just a subsidiary at the loss of the company. However I suspect it’s to include maybe a glass of wine and then everyone’s on their own after that.
£25 for a meal at Christmas with no drinks is still a bargain.
Personally I wouldn’t moan.

I can't imagine much booze is included for that, unless it's very heavily subsidised! If it's just a glass of fizz on arrival or something then it wouldn't really bother me. Last year I was pregnant for my old work's do and they did try to stop me paying an equal share on the night as they'd had wine etc, but I didn't really grudge it for the sake of a few quid and the hassle of being 'that person'.

then I wouldn't ask for anything off either. Some people might have one glass, some might have loads, some might have none, that's just the way these things work.

If its a drink at the start and with the meal there's usually an alcohol free alternative and they're often cost as much as the wine.

Most set menu meals are way more than £25 so I would say it's still cheap if it's a sit down meal so just pay it. I would double check however that they do have some nice soft drinks for you not just a warm Diet Coke!
