AIBU to use Johnston’s detangling shampoo on mixed race hair?

My baby is mixed race & is soon to get his curly hair through. I am thinking of using Johnson’s detangling shampoo.

What should I use?

Boris Johnson makes shampoo? Surely he should be running the country. That's probably why he is doing such a crap job

Assuming you're white and dad is black (because you don't say what mix of races) then why don't you ask dad? Having said that, there are so many different types of curls you'd probably be better off waiting until baby actually has some.

I have asked DD but as he is black he’s said mixed face hair is different as the products he uses will be too moisturising Confused

Doesn't sound like the baby has much hair to shampoo at the moment. I'd try a normal baby shampoo to start with.

They will for a baby. Probably not when he’s older. I use products designed for black hair, I am white but my hair is curly and needs lots of moisture.

Baby shampoo is fine. Maybe get a little spray bottle of leave in conditioner if it gets curly and knotty very quickly - but you’ll probably find it won’t until he’s a bit older. I was about two when my hair stopped being silky baby hair.

Hi, I'm mixed and would say Johnson's is fine whilst they're young. Don't use Afro Caribbean products yet as they're too heavy for a little head of hair.

Don't know how old baby is but very young babies won't need a lot of products. If his curls haven't come through what exactly are you de-tangling? As PP, assuming you mean black and white mixed, there is not one type of "mixed race" hair. What's right for one person will not work for another because the right haircare depends on how porous the hair is, how much hair there is, and what the curl pattern is. You can look up curl pattern charts to see what type of products are best suited to the child's curl pattern, and hair needs also change as the child grows. I actually think it's very limiting to be asking advice here tbh although I understand you might not have thought about it, but mixed and afro hair requires specific care. You could take your child to an afro hair dresser to ask what would work best for the current texture too, or ask friends and family. I can't advise you based just on "mixed race hair" as, as I said this isn't a hair type.

I wouldn't use any shampoo regularly, just conditioner to finger comb through his hair and a good leave-in conditioner.
Different hair takes different products, if DS's hair is finer/ less corse than DH's he may well need a less 'greasy' product.

It's really just a case of trial and error and finding what DS's hair likes.

Mixed Chicks
Cantu
Curl Smith
Deva Curl

I like all of these and use them in mine and my children's hair.

Just use normal baby shampoo. Worked fine for my DCs.

I used Pantene for years for myself now switched to non-sulphates/parabens. I don't think you have to use special shampoos for afro hair at all. The moisturiser is more the key thing, as your child grows.

motherheroic · 06/11/2019 23:53

It will be fine in the very early years but you need to ask the fathers family for help, or start reading up now. Nothing worse than seeing a mixed race child with dry tangled hair, or when the mother has decided to straighten or relax it because it's 'easier to manage'.

Try Shea Moisture, Auntie Jackie or Cantu products. They all have children's ranges which are really good.

Please dont use Child Farms or J&J they are really drying on the hair.

Depending on his hair type you might want to co-wash. Search youtube for advice on routines, hair typing and products especially for babies and children.

Mixed race hair is very trial and error....

I would advise that you wait until the curls have come through to determine the curl pattern, porosity and thickness.

Some basics to prepare you are a water spray bottle, natural oil such as olive or coconut, detangling spray, tangle teaser & afro comb.

Once the curls have come through you'll have a feel for the amount of moisture required. Thicker hair with tighter curls tends to favour heavier creams where as finer looser curls usually favour a spray moisturizer.

Always wet the hair before applying products to style, and seal any moisturizer with an oil.

In answer to your question the shampoo should be fine until his curls appear.

Product recommendations from me for when the curls appear are lush r n b and the shea moisture line.
