Which job is better

Hi everyone

Just posting here as I can't seem to decide between two roles so need some unbiased advice, so here goes....,

Job 1

-my current job, extremely close to home (walking distance) and children's school, ok pay, though company are going through restructure and trying to save money so many locums (which I am) are loosing jobs in favour of permanent people

I am told that I am relatively safe for now but of course this is not guaranteed as could be replaced at any time with permanent staff member

There is currently a change of staff happening so getting new managers etc

I stepped up in role and love many things about the job eg support previously offered etc

Would have loved to stay but can't afford drop in pay if becoming permanent right now

Job 2

Same rate of pay, previously worked there at lower grade

Contract offered for 1 year

Also close to home but around 30 min commute

New job at this grade would slightly more changing but would give me more experience for future roles

New manager ok as well but don't necessarily trust senior management who are less diverse than in current company

So my lovely people what would you do....

Stay with current role for as long as possible. If the other job was permanent, I might feel differently.

user1461609321 · 06/11/2019 20:06

I guess I am just fearful of being asked to leave at short notice when I could potentially secure a role for at least a year if not longer

There is that. It's a hard decision, OP.
Bear this in mind--they aren't the only two jobs available. So if you choose one, nothing to say you can't look for other opportunities also.

Very true...

I guess I just struggle with change, and like to know where I am especially with young kids, bills etc. Just like to plan and don't like feeling as though I am not in control

I guess I always want to feel like I am making a decision rather than being pushed eg if I'm current role, they recruit permanently, would I secure a new job quickly at the same seniority level

As I am currently being offered.... this is all about my own anxieties really

Hm... Is there a specific reason why you fear being terminated at your current job (or is it 'just' restructuring)?

New manager ok as well but don't necessarily trust senior management who are less diverse than in current company

Diversity is obviously incredibly important. But seeing as this is ultimately about how that might affect you personally... Less diverse in which way? And are you someone with an identity that's generally more or less likely to deal with the repercussions of having a less diverse management team?

New job at this grade would slightly more changing but would give me more, experience for future roles

Which would be fairly valuable, I imagine...

user1461609321 · 06/11/2019 20:24

Well diversity is important as a person of colour when considering career progression and whether the issue of 'does my face fit' may come about

The new area is also less ethnically diverse, and more middle class, and an area I have considered moving to eventually.

The work is public facing and seems to have less social problems than in current role, though I am also concerned about institutional racism etc

No reason to fear being replaced in current role as I enjoy my job and I'm told I'm good at it.

None at all- just the companies incessant drive to save money by reducing locum workers at a fast rate

Ah.
so:
1 year job a security vs the possibility of being sacked within the year but als the possibility of being employed for more than a year.

Valuable experiences

Less social problems

Less diversity.....

I really don't know. Sorry..

The new job does sound tempting. But the lack of diversity does sound like it may be an issue. Is there anyone that could offer some sort of insight /may know about the 'corporate culture' at the 2nd place of work?

CravingCheese · 06/11/2019 23:07

What I do:
I make a list with all the pros and cons and then assign points (between one and 5/minus 5) to every pro and con. The points correspond to how much value I place on a particular issue.

I generally pick the column/option that won by points.
