To use a second hand car seat for 1 trip.

I'm planning to get the coach to the airport and need a car seat for my 1 year old, I don't want to take my normal 0+ car seat as I'm worried it will be damaged in the hold as it's my main one and is with my travel system. I would leave it at the airport's luggage storage facility but will be flying into a different airport home.

I'm not sure whether to use a second hand one for this one trip. It is something I refused to by second hand.

I wouldn't, just take your usual car seat. It goes in the hold with the fragile luggage and will be absolutely fine.

I'll be honest it would depend on what you mean by second hand

ONe brought off a stranger online? no I wouldn't
One I got (even if I paid for it) from someone who I knew where I knew it hadn't been in an accident I would

I think the whole ‘not second hand’ is a fairly low risk situation that’s taken hold, mainly unnecessarily.

crochetractor · 06/11/2019 16:03

Using one that's been chucked about by baggage handlers and in the hold of an airplane is probably as risky as using a second hand one so I'd go for it.

@BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack just don't like the idea of not being able to see it... I'm just being silly I guess. I just thought maybe, any car seat for just one trip is better than no car seat (national express don't require a car seat Hmm). You're right though, I'm asking because I can't bring myself to actually do it.

@crochetractor that's what I thought, just keep thinking what if something did happen Sad.. but surely you'd say the same about a car seat that was delivered by a retailer?

We have had to hire a car seat abroad for our DD before when she was younger and it was fine. I understand for every day trips but realistically very few seats will have been in serious accidents so when weighing up risk I wouldn't be too concerned.

I’ve only ever used second hand car seats. Most people I know have, partly as I don’t have my own car but it’s for occasional journeys. Honestly, for most people it’s the norm.

StudentMummy92 · 06/11/2019 16:22

Is having a car seat delivered dangerous?

Of course not, how do you think they get from the manufacturers to the retailers.

Listen, you are way over thinking this.

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 06/11/2019 17:12

Waaaay over.

StudentMummy92 · 06/11/2019 17:13

@BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack I am aren't I! Typical me really!

Think I'm going to get the train as I've found one that gets me there early doors. Flight is 06.35.

Thanks everyone.

It depends entirely on what you mean by second hand. We had a maxi cosi given to us by my best friend (our regular seat was isofix only) which we used for travelling. I knew it had never been in a crash so it was fine. I wouldn’t buy one from a random stranger online. That said we’ve also flown with the car seat and it gets tagged as fragile. As PP have correctly pointed out, it gets transported from the factory to the retailer (possibly via a distribution centre or 2 along the way). You are way overthinking it!
