I work 4 full days a week. My training course is 5 days and I have another 5 day course coming up too (ie 10 days total) ! Naturally, I am looking forward to the training and think it would be beneficial for my job.

AIBR to ask for 2 days off in lieu because of this? Bearing in mind that I have done loads of unpaid overtime recently, and other full time members of my team have been granted days off in lieu for their overtime?

no that is fine i only work mornings, if i do something that is a whole day i have a morning off in leiu

debbiewebweb · 18/08/2007 11:35

of course you should ask for time off in lieu - I used to.

Surfermum · 18/08/2007 11:36

I only work 2 days. If I have to do something on a day I don't work I either swap my days or they pay me.

TwoToTango · 18/08/2007 12:23

Seems totally reasonable to me. I work 4 days - if I get asked to work an extra day I can either get paid for it or have a day off in lieu.

I work 2 days a week basic, but if i do any overtime, they always pay me. You shouldnt have to do it for nothing (give or take a an hour or so!)

It should be paid or TOIL

But do be delicate about how you say it. In my experience, managers have often have had bad experiences about part-timers who are 'precious' about their hours (e.g. won't stay five minutes late on their working days, even though it's pretty expected that everyone doesn't clock out to the minute) so sometimes, even though it is a totally reasonable request, they automatically have their guard up. I would phrase it as 'swapping' some days so that you can do the training days ("My course covers Friday and that's not one of my normal working days. Is it ok if I swap it with next Monday?")

Depends where you work of course. Some managers have no such hang ups. Depends if people have taken the mick in the past. You are being totally reasonable. I once heard of someone who only worked mornings and wanted time off in lieu to attend the socialising/networking lunch at the end of a morning training course! That, well in my opinion that was taking the mick!
