To think 8k for a second hand car is adequate?

DH is wanting to buy a new car. He currently doesn't have a pension. I think he should sort pension first and cut his cloth accordingly. He thinks 8k for a car in any case is fine to spend. Please help settle an argument!

He'd be better off getting a newer car with that money though. He seems to lack financial sense is general. He could get a good workhorse car that's much newer for 8k, not something seven years old.
