I wet the bed last night

I’m not the wee troll and not looking for personal stories of people wetting themselves.

So, rarely I have “the toilet dream” maybe twice a year if that (dream you’re on bog and wet the bed). Last night no such dream, for the first time in my life I literally just wet the bed. Woke up in the middle of the night all wet and realised what I’d done.

I’m worried! What can cause this? I’m 38

Alcohol? Prescription drugs? Stress? Sheer exhaustion?

What a nasty shock. I'd be consulting the GP if there's no obvious explanation.

Bluntness100 · 06/11/2019 14:25

Even wetting the bed twice a year isn't the norm as an adult.

Unless it's something like alcohol I'd see a gp.

onioncrumble · 06/11/2019 14:25

I used to do this when I was a student. No alcohol. But waking up being slapped y the German girl next door was worse than any wee dreams I have had since

SatansReject · 06/11/2019 14:27

No alcohol but I am exhausted and stressed. I do drink but Funnily enough I’ve never wet the bed after alcohol

Some people have an overactive or weak bladder, especially when stressed, though that would tend not to be just while they're asleep- in the day they have to run to the loo sometimes etc.

It's probably nothing more, but worth going to your GP and getting it checked out xxx

GettingABitDesperateNow · 06/11/2019 14:34

Did you eat or drink anything different yesterday? Maybe if you have been exhausted you just finally were in a really deep sleep

Conkerer · 06/11/2019 14:39

I don't think wetting the bed during a toilet dream twice a year is normal. (I have the toilet dreams frequently, (whole other story!) but have never, ever wet the bed.)
So this isn't an isolated incident. You need to look at the whole picture. I'd start with a trip to the GP.
Hope you get to the bottom of it (pardon the pun!).

KitKat1985 · 06/11/2019 14:47

Do you possibly have a urine infection?

FavouriteSoul · 06/11/2019 14:57

GP appointment I'd suggest. Possibly a UTI? It's unusual for a healthy adult to wet the bed.

Excited101 · 06/11/2019 15:01

I’d assume UTI (happened to me once) but twice a year anyway makes me think something odd might be going on with your bladder...

SatansReject · 06/11/2019 15:10

My wee doesn’t smell though, I have testing strips at home and they suggest nothing abnormal. It’s all a bit worrying because my eye sight is going to shit, I’m losing my hearing and I’m getting fat. Approaching the big 40 I’m worried that I’m going downhill rapidly

shearwater · 06/11/2019 15:17

I've done it very occasionally as an adult- probably twice in my life. I've no idea why, there was no obvious reason. I just put a towel under me over the wet patch and shoved everything in the wash in the morning, and gave the mattress a good clean.

As others have said though, get checked out by the GP.

Mollpop · 06/11/2019 15:24

I wouldn't worry if it's a one off, but if it becomes more frequent or if you're worried, see the doctor

JinglingHellsBells · 06/11/2019 15:37

I think you ought to be tested for diabetes. If you are overweight, weeing more (losing control) and have eyesight issues these can all be part of type 2 diabetes.

On the other hand, the weeing can be overactive bladder which is easily sorted with drugs from your GP but you will prob need to see someone to check your bladder is working okay. It's just the muscle of your bladder overreacts.

See your GP.

I agree. When I have that dream it usually turns into a really frustrating one where I'm running around a building I don't know desperately looking for a loo but not finding a usable one.

It sounds as if you may have weak or overactive bladder muscles that need sorting out.

ClapHandsAndSaveTheFairies · 06/11/2019 15:51

Get tested for diabetes.

The only time I wet myself during a toilet dream, I was six or seven.

It's not normal at all, particularly if it's full on wetting.

I beg to differ. I haven't done it for years now (I'm quite old) but in my younger days it did happen to me occasionally. Bladder is full, sleeping brain obligingly pretends you're safely on the toilet, & bingo.

Softskin88 · 06/11/2019 16:07

In the short term, if you’re under 8st 12lbs you might want to buy DryNites 8-15 years.

My daughter has (just- fingers crossed!) stopped using them but they fit much older children and are so stretchy they would probably fit me.

In the longer term, please please please see your GP.

I had a couple of friends this happened to at Uni but it was always after drinking alcohol.

No offence, but I’m not posting the otherwise hilarious stories in case this is a troll post. I’m sure you understand. Smile

BrendasUmbrella · 06/11/2019 16:19

If your pee doesn't smell, it's likely you're drinking too much water and your bladder is over full.

Have a pee when you're getting ready for bed, then right before you;re ready to turn the light out, go again. And try not to drink within the last hour before bed.

SevenStones · 06/11/2019 16:24

This happened to me a few years ago!

I googled and it seems to be a fairly innocuous event that happens to people as a one off. I'd been having a very vivid dream about going to the loo and woke myself up just starting to have a wee.

It never happened again. I think if it stays as a one off, I wouldn't worry about it.

If it does happen again, probably worth getting things checked out.

ConFusion360 · 06/11/2019 16:27

It happened to m a couple of years ago. I couldn't believe it.

Then I realised the stopper had come out of the hot water bottle.

LaMigraine · 06/11/2019 16:31

This has happened to DH twice in about 3 years. First time he was horrified but the GP said it was unusual but he shouldn't worry. Second time (the other week) they said the same (think it was a different GP, but he told them it had happened once previously).

I guess the GPs know best but personally it worries me a little. He's in his 50s and I wondered about his prostate. But I am not exactly medically qualified...

adaline · 06/11/2019 16:36

If it's happening twice a year I would go to the GP - I don't think that's normal and you shouldn't have to go live with incontinence like that.

Bluerussian · 06/11/2019 16:42

It happened to me when I was 24, I was dreaming about having a wee and woke up doing it - couldn't stop then! I had been at a friend's house the night before and we were drinking vodka. I had too much but felt OK, someone gave me a lift home.

Once I'd woken and cleaned myself up, changed sheet etc, I had a helluva hangover which served me right. I was at the time going out with the man who became my husband the following year - I told him about it and he thought it was hilarious! He wouldn't have thought that had he been next to me in the bed.

It does happen to people occasionally. Stress definitely plays a part. OP, worrying about it isn't going to help. Either seek medical advice (which could find no abnormality but at least then you'd be reassured), or try to put it out of your mind. It may never happen again! I hope that is the case for you.

Do your best to reduce the stress in your life, have the other health problems you mentioned investigated. Be frank with your GP who may be able to link all the symptoms together and find a treatable cause.

cacklingmags · 06/11/2019 16:44

Get to the GP asap. I am 66 and have wee and even poo dreams but have never done either (in the bed). You need to get checked out.
