Songs that annoy you - light hearted

DobbyLovesSocks · 06/11/2019 12:41

I have a minor medical procedure today so in a bid to distract myself can I please ask you for the songs that annoy you and the reason why?
Mine are: Dolly Parton 'Jolene' - asking someone not to take her man away. If your man wants to cheat he will and if he will he is not worth hanging on to.
Whitney Houston 'Saving all my love' - basically singing about having an affair. So disrespectful but it's ok because no other man will do

Anything by Justin Bieber. Can’t stand him

Ariana Grande no tears left to cry, mostly incoherent, I don’t like songs I have to google the lyrics to.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 11/11/2019 21:42

I hate No More Tears Left to Cry too, but only because it was playing in the vet's waiting room when I was waiting to have a pet put to sleep this year. So now I have that association and will always think of pet death when I hear it. Even before that, her inability to enunciate properly was irritating.

Speaking (ha!) of enunciation, I get quite riled by Elton John and his habit of not finishing his words. In Sacrifice (or sack-er-ee-fahhhs as he puts it), he manages to turn the phrase "cold cold heart" into "coco haaaa". It took me years to figure out what he was actually trying to say.

crazymumma10 · 11/11/2019 21:54

ALL ABOUT THAT BASS - so annoying 😡

I always thought he was singing about coco pops Grin

zemblanity · 12/11/2019 07:22

Anything by The Beautiful South or The House Martins. I cannot stand that blokes voice, it's so nasally and the women singing some of them are whiney too. all the songs are so annoying. (Especially A Little Time, Perfect 10 and Rotterdam)

Also, other nasally singers - looking at you Roman Keating Angry

MrsBudd · 12/11/2019 07:33

You're Gorgeous by Babybird. It's horrible!!!

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 12/11/2019 07:52

Ooh, ooh, just thought of another one - Lonely Boy by Andrew Gold. It's about a little boy whose parents betray him by... having another child so that he no longer gets all the attention. That's it - no abuse or neglect, they just have a second child and point out that he has to be nice to her because she's smaller than him. Such hardship, such an objectionable brat.

CockleburIck · 12/11/2019 09:10

Oh god yes, Eoin! I always wondered what I was missing in that song because I thought no one can be that pissed off just because they've got a younger sibling. What self-centredness!

CockleburIck · 12/11/2019 09:13

Another annoying song from that era "Escape (the Pina colada sing)" by Rupert Holmes. He and his "lady" had a lot more in common than he realised; not least that they were both happy to cheat and look for someone new whilst still in a relationship. They deserve each other, frankly.

bluebell34567 · 12/11/2019 09:20

all ed sheeran songs.

JustDanceAddict · 12/11/2019 09:29

Any thing by Chris (Dire) Rea. Dirge.
Anything by Whitney Houston - warbling shite.
Loveshack - B52s - overplayed as a student and I can’t bear it now.

Any cover of One by U2, can’t top perfection.

CockleburIck · 12/11/2019 09:31

Any thing by Chris (Dire) Rea 😂

Lucytwosie · 12/11/2019 09:32

Anything by Simply Red, especially Fairground, I'd have to walk out of somewhere if they were playing.

SnugglySnerd · 12/11/2019 09:41

Anything by Coldplay, Adele or Catatonia. Especially Catatonia. There's a stampede to turn of the radio in our house when they come on!

IamMadameX · 12/11/2019 09:44

@Lucytwosie I was just about to say Fairground, that song fills me with rage, anything my them really.

My DP wanted to go and see Simply Red live the other day, never been so relived that it's nearly sold out, only seats available right at back and he won't pay £74 to sit there

A song by Enternal I think it's called I wanna be the only one, it just goes on and one, I wanna be the only one, yeah yeah yeah

mumwon · 12/11/2019 09:46

I haven't gone through all the pages but: Maxwell's silver hammers ugh
its an ear worm as well.

The80sweregreat · 12/11/2019 09:53

I always thought that 'lonely boy' had other meanings : once they got the child they really wanted he was then abandoned to his fate by his parents after them doting on him as a baby. A lot of kids feel this way when a new sibling comes along I bet.
It was on the radio all the time when I was a kid.

JustDanceAddict · 12/11/2019 09:58

Whoever mentioned Mistletoe and Wine by CR. So true, I sniggered at your reply as feel exactly the same. Tbh if he appears on TV I have to turn it off. 🤢

CalamityJune · 12/11/2019 09:59

I wouldn't dislike a song based on it being about an affair or something. Books and TV shows have anti heroes, so I don't see why songs can't. I do dislike songs that have irritating tunes, are overplayed or have clumsy lyrics.

I don't like that Shut Up and Dance song. I also get really fed up with all request shows like the Radio 2 drive time where people ring up with the most obvious fucking choices. "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen, "We Are Family" etc. What a waste!!!

mumwon · 12/11/2019 10:00

My first job the shop next door was a record shop (shows age!) & they played "Ebony Eyes" all-day-long for days-on-end - I use to like that song... My dm hated "Bali Hai" from South Pacific for a similar reason, she travelled on a plane to Australia in the 60's when they use to play canned music - guess the air hostesses favourite musical choice! (48 hours of hell listening to the same song, over &over again)

CockleburIck · 12/11/2019 10:08

Oh I don't actively dislike "Escape" - it's very catchy and my friends and I loved singing it at approx age 10 in primary school! But their behaviour (and the catchiness) is just annoying!

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 12/11/2019 10:22

The80sweregreat I may be especially sensitive because I am the younger sister of a brother, but I didn't really get that from the lyrics. If you read them, there's no suggestion of abandonment, just that his parents, rightly, had to attend to his sister's needs because she was, you know, a baby. It's the way he's so petulant about how his parents "lied" that he was their only one. Given that it is apparently autobiographical, I wonder how his sister felt about that song?

OnionsOnionsOnions · 12/11/2019 10:29

That lady Gaga ft Bradley Cooper song! Constantly overplayed.

UnitedRoad · 12/11/2019 11:23

I’ve got loads I can’t bear - Torn by Natalie Imbruglia, anything by The Beautiful South, and that song which might be called The Greatest Day by Take That, because he sings notes that make me want to never hear music again.

Frankie by Sister Sledge was very popular when I was young, but I didn’t realise until my daughters dance class used it in a competition, how dodgy it was. ‘You were 15 and I was 12, it was summer we were so in love. I’ve never loved anyone this much, look at me, I’m thrilled to your touch’ My daughter and her friends would then sing ‘Frankie, are you a paedophile?’

The other one is I Drove All Night by Roy Orbison. Really old song but still gets played a lot.

I drive all night to get to you
Is that alright?
I drove all night, crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that alright?

You’re asking afterwards??? Also wake me from my sleep, and I will punch you in the face. Such a creepy creepy song.

The Power of Love by FGTH is one of my all time favourites though.

Rupert Holmes is a very talented and underrated singer songwriter IM (humble) O. AFAIK has been happily married to his childhood sweetheart for about 50 years.
