To get an Electric car even though my petrol one has years of life?

Really, really want to go electric. DD is nagging me and she's right. For years I prided myself on being a non driver and using public transport but then I was suddenly a lone parent with two small children and it just wasn't practical so I learnt to drive.

Current car cost 6k in 2015, it was made in 2010. I've put 50k more miles on it but engine wise etc it's totally reliable and likely has years more use. I'd get very little resale value for it due to panel damage and scratches (fight with a wallBlush).

I only spend 100/125 pounds a month on petrol so it would take AGES to recoup the cost of an electric car.

But I want one!!! I could afford the repayments on the various schemes, just seems a waste when I have a perfectly good car.

Anyone feel like this? Gone electric??

I have a hybrid and I love it, but will go full electric in the future. In your shoes op I would wait until my current car dies, that's what I did. I have heard about these self driving cars of the future, but surely they are a long way off. I am in and out of the car all day doing school runs, how would ordering a car each time work for me? Also I need a toddler car seat in it for the first run then another larger seat for the second, and a booster for the 3rd run, how would that work! And for commuting, everyone would need the available cars at the same time, how would that work? Genuinely curious.

If you're looking at leasing electric, there's eveasy. We've done a like for like on a tesla model 3 vs my current Volvo v90 and even though the lease is 3x the price (and the v90 was an INSANE deal when I got it for the car it is), because of fuel and insurance it breaks even for the driving I do for work. I'll be switching when my current lease is up. Hopefully as BIC drops so more company cars are electric and people replace lease cars through companies like eveasy the 2nd hand market will pick up and ev's will become more widely affordable.

why on earth would Bluewater need 10,000 posts? Very very few users would recharge on a trip to a shopping centre, given they are likely to have driven their from their homes which are unlikely to be 200 miles away (the range of newer models).

10,000 is probably an exaggeration but a lot of people would need to use these charging points as less and less houses/flats have off road parking. I couldn't park and charge at home, hence I won't be getting an electric car until there's no other choice.

Bear in mind that the costs of EV ownership are likely to go up in future as the government of the day will undoubtedly seek to replace the revenue lost on fossil fuel sales by taxing road use and/or electricity used.

Boireannachlaidir · 08/11/2019 13:36

I think the fact that you WANT something despite having something that already works and doesn't yet need to be replaced sums it up. Times that by everyone worldwide living in a wealthy consumerist country and you can see why the planet and it's resources are in such a mess.

Fix ""I'm undecided whether or not to go for an e-Niro, or a tesla model 3 when the BIK/Company car tax drops to 0% in april for zero-emission vehicles."

We went for it sooner because the spike in demand them might affect pricing

Tensixtysix · 08/11/2019 13:48

It would only work for you if living in a city and you never drove more than 200 miles a week. You'd need your own driveway and a fast charger of course. Don't they cost 3K to install?
Hybrids are a bit 'iffy' as you have to contend with catalyst converter thieves!

reallyrandomwords · 08/11/2019 14:24

Ten that is incredibly inaccurate!

We regularly use our electric car for that sort of mileage in a day! It was fun to balance before we had our charger fitted (had to wait a while for the electrician) it cost £800... we've done 5k on it in two months (we don't get out until a week or two into the September term).

We live in a small village, town my kids are at school at is 8 miles, we go to the next nearest town 15 miles away at least 6 times a week, I go to the nearest city 23 miles away at least three times a week and it's also taken to the next nearest city 39 miles away at least 5 times a week....

The car has a range of nearly 300 miles, and it's easy to top up when travelling if necessary.

reallyrandomwords · 08/11/2019 14:25

That should say we didn't get it until...

FrankiesKnuckle · 08/11/2019 14:27

Had an egolf for 3 months - absolutely love it even though it's 'old' tech already. The VW ID3 being released early next year with double the range of the current egolf.
We were spending £300 pm on petrol commuting - now £40/50 on electric. No brainer really!

wonkylegs · 08/11/2019 14:50

I have a plug in hybrid golf on lease and when that's up i'm hoping to get the VW ID3 and go fully electric
I had my previous car for 14 years before this one and only changed because it didn't really work when we had another kid especially as DS1 is now the same size as me.
Our long term plan is to move some of our charging from mains to our solar panels.
Like the OP my previous car was in perfect working order, mine had no damage bar a tiny dent in the rear bumper that needed to be pointed out to people before they noticed - I loved the car and really didn't want to scrap it but luckily my neighbour wanted it and bought it off me as it was a perfect runabout for them. It's still going 2years later and so we are both very happy - I suspect my original car is actually better off with them as it gets a weekly rather than annual wash & wax.
