Can my baby feed laying down?

Posting here for traffic. My 6 month old is bottle fed. No issues. He’s suddenly just stopped wanting to be fed normally he will only feed laying down propped up by a pillow? Is this even safe? Thank you!

Yes it's fine. You will find he will want to feed himself soon

NearlyGranny · 06/11/2019 10:09

Absolutely fine. Think about the position you'd have to hold a 6 month old baby in to breast-fed! What are you calling a normal position here?

Mine were all bf and often we'd both be lying down for night feeds.

mawof3soontobe · 06/11/2019 10:14

Not sure why people are saying it's safe, it's not. The reason it's not safe to ff this way but it's safe to BF is because baby controls the milk flow from the breast, whereas gravity controls milk from the bottle and increases the risk of choking.

Endeavour1971 · 06/11/2019 10:18

I would say it's okay if you are still holding the bottle, otherwise it could be a choking hazard

PotteringAlong · 06/11/2019 10:20

Breastfeeding, fine. Bottle feeding i would have thought was a choking risk?

JJSS123 · 06/11/2019 10:37

He’s still on a smaller teat than what he should be as he just doesn’t like the faster flow on the mam teats. He should be on size 3 and it literally falls out and he hates it so I’ve kept him on size 2 as he’s obviously more comfortable with that. And his milk is a comfort milk so slightly thicker? Really appreciate everyone’s advice. I was thinking about babies who lay in there cots completely flat and feed themselves where as I’m holding the bottle and keeping an eye at all times? And when I refer to a normal feeding position I mean like in arms. X

What maw said. It’s a risk because the baby isn’t controlling the flow like they would when BF. I would speak to your local infant feeding team if you’re having problems. They’re there for FF as well not just BF mums.

Confusedbeetle · 06/11/2019 10:41

No and No. Never prop feed. A baby should be held in your arms to feed. Quite apsrt from the safety issues is is more loving. Soon it will be time to move on to solids and a cup so you wont be bottle feeding much and it should stop by a year. It is a bad practice

JJSS123 · 06/11/2019 10:45

It’s not that I don’t want to feed him in my arms. He just suddenly doesn’t want it.

My DD refused to feed whilst being held from about 6 months so I have no choice but to feed her whilst she's laid down. I always hold the bottle and we've never had any issues.

FunOnTheBeach20 · 06/11/2019 11:17

Not for ff no.

PotteringAlong · 06/11/2019 12:02

Then can he sit up and feed himself?

FunOnTheBeach20 · 06/11/2019 12:19

Yes, he can feed himself sat up. It’s a choking hazard lying down.

NearlyGranny · 06/11/2019 12:23

I did have bf DD choking on the flow once, but she had DB triggering things on the other side. I fed them separately after that.

I don't think OP was ever thinking of propping DC and walking away!

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 06/11/2019 12:23

As others have said, this isn't safe with a bottle.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 06/11/2019 12:23

If you're holding the bottle and are right there looking at him then it's fine. It's not ok to prop a bottle on a pillow in front of the baby with you pushing the pram for example where you can't see him.

Ds used to like sitting in my lap facing out feeding, nosey so and so Grin

GrumpyHoonMain · 06/11/2019 12:24

No it’s not safe at all for bottlefed babies.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 06/11/2019 12:27

The baby is propped up NOT the bottle, the OP will be holding the bottle. Baby isn't lying down, the thread title is misleading.

Ponoka7 · 06/11/2019 12:30

If you're holding the bottle and watching it's ok.

Any the else isn't for a bottle fed baby.

JJSS123 · 06/11/2019 13:00

Sorry about the title didn’t think!!! Yes he will be propped on a pillow that seems to be his favourite and then I will be holding the bottle at all times. He is never left alone whilst
Feeding ever. I wouldn’t even know how to prop a bottle up!

@MrsPellegrinoPetrichor a baby should not have a pillow before the age of two either!

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 06/11/2019 15:24

No,not to sleep on but the baby is six months and this is to feed with the mother holding the bottle
