I want....

Went out to buy a sandwich for lunch today - usually make my own.

OMG- I just wanted a normal wheat packed bread with ham and cheese, nothing flash difficult or exotic.

I could have a vegan Xmas feast, gluten free, vegan, plantarian, lactose free, pescatarian, no E numbers, no green leaf, plant friendly etc etc fecking sandwich

But no wheat bread in the bloody shop and no bloody meat.

Each to their own but seriously stop shoving this stuff in my face, I just want a nice no cardboard tasting sandwich.

Where were you? That doesn’t sound like any sandwich shop I’ve been to.

Sparklingbrook · 05/11/2019 23:10

I am guessing you weren't in Greggs...

stuffedpeppers · 05/11/2019 23:28

Pret

That’s highly unusual for them. We’re you going post proper lunch time and they’d basically sold out of everything? Most of their sandwiches contain meat and gluten.

joffreyscoffees · 06/11/2019 07:40

Greggs is actually one of the worst places to go for vegetarian/vegan sandwiches Hmm I usually have to just get a cheese one, which is pretty boring!

It's not being shoved down your throat, it's called 'allowing everyone their choice'. You obviously went on a day when all the meat eaters had already been in.

Didn't get a vegan sausage roll then, no?

joffreyscoffees · 06/11/2019 07:41

Got confused with the post above. Sentiments the same though. Pret are great at allowing choice, they also have a huge amount of meat and seafood sandwiches.

NewAndImprovedNorks · 06/11/2019 07:43

Were you in a veggie Pret?

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2019 07:45

On their website there are 10 meat/fish sandwiches, 6 veggie ones (including the very normal cheese and pickle or egg ones) and one vegan sandwich.

I smell a vegan bashing thread..,

MollyButton · 06/11/2019 07:48

I could join in as to why Sainsbury's et al don't do a plain Ham Sandwich any more, the one with a little bit of butter or Mayo. It is very hard to get one without Cheese, which as I don't like much, but I don't need the just bread and a bit of ham shoved in it.
Best Sandwich I had recently was from the food place at a local beauty spot - lovely Ham Salad one.

lotsofoysters · 06/11/2019 07:49

Pret are actually pretty terrible for wheat free, the only option is usually a salad.

Almost all of their sandwiches and wraps are wheat. A lot of them contain meat or cheese. Their vegetarian and vegan sandwiches have normal food in like vegetables, rather than processed soya based shite.

Did you accidentally step into a Pret in an alternative universe?

Doormat247 · 06/11/2019 07:50

This annoys me too as I frequently can't find anything to eat.
I just want a PLAIN sandwich and can't get them for love nor money - they're all smeared in some type of slime, sauce, chutney, god knows what else.
Or they're on a type of bread I can't eat.
I'd avoid pret anyway due to their recent allergy issues as I can't risk it (plus they're way too expensive).

lotsofoysters · 06/11/2019 07:55

Here you go, op

I want....
BarbaraofSeville · 06/11/2019 08:07

Where are you all looking? All the supermarkets, M&S, Boots and probably most places do plain ham, cheese and egg mayonnaise sandwiches on normal white or brown bread and they're usually quite cheap - £1-2.

Asda

Tesco

Sainsburys

MollyButton · 06/11/2019 08:14

The Asda one might do for me - but the nearest branch is 6+ miles away. The Tesco's and Sainsburys are both "No Mayo" - and even at £1-2 that is expensive considering it is just ham stuck between dry bread - cheaper to buy a roll and a packet of ham.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/11/2019 08:27

Well of course making your own sandwiches is cheaper than buying even cheap sandwiches, but on a thread about ready made sandwiches, the suggestion to make your own is usually met with derision.

Although if you are in Tesco or Sainsburys and don't like the sandwiches on offer, you could always buy a loose roll and some cheese and ham, either from the deli counter if you only want enough for one sandwich, or from the choice of hundreds of prepacked options on offer. Like this man did.

I suspect that the OP inadvertently went into a vegetarian Pret store, so it is unsurprising that there were no ham and cheese sandwiches, but it would be a strange place where Pret was the only option, seeing as they tend to be exclusively in busy high streets or railway stations. I'm sure if the OP had looked a few metres in any direction, there would have been several other options.
