Following on from an earlier post I made on here today, after 3.5 years I am tired of being self employed for a number of reasons, however the main ones being the lack of income security, no pension, no paid holidays and no career progression.

I have decided to dust off the CV and try and apply for some 9-5 admin roles, however after 3.5 years of working in a completely different field, I’m struggling to know what to put on my CV/ any potential job applications re wanting to give up my business and go back to being employed?

Is there a positive way I can word the above without waffling on too much?

Just put it simply and clearly: after 3.5 years of being self employed I would like to return in house and work as an employee again, so am applying for roles that would enable me to do that.

If pushed on why in an interview you could say things such as 'i miss being part of a solid team. Employees have a much deeper understanding of a business, it's successes and it's challenges and I'd like to be back in the heart of the action.' and I don't think there's anything negative in simply saying 'i want the stability of employment again'

Don't say anything, just tell them you really want that job, and want it enough to stop being SE. That's what they want to hear!

I know but aren’t you meant to have like an ‘objective/ personal statement’ at the top of your CV outlining what your skills are and what you’re looking for etc? I feel it’d be a bit weird to not mention anything? Gah, I think I need to pay a CV expert to take a look at it as I have no bloody idea!

I personally would just tailor it to each job you are applying for. So for example 'I would like to apply for x position because of my interests in x,y and z and I feel I would be of benefit to your company because of my skills and experiences in.....' obviously worded a lot better

The personal statement at the top of a CV should be a summary of what you offer ie your skills and things like team player or fast learner. A CV shouldn’t make any reference to what you are looking for or why you are looking. Your covering letter (or personal statement in an application form) should say why that particular role has you interested and should only include positive statements such as ‘I am interested in working for your company because we share the same values of putting customers first and working as a team’ or ‘I love the of my role and your role will give me an opportunity to do more of that. I also echo what Jollitwiglet says.

Agree you don't need to put anything on your CV - just big up your strength/suitability for the role you are applying about.

If you are asked at interview I guess you could say something bland like "I was looking for a new challenge and this job really attracted me because ...."
