Did you take GCSE English Lang in 1997? Do you remember this question?

Husband absolutely refuses to believe that in my GCSE English Language exam I had the text of She's Leaving Home by Lennon/McCartney and had to write a note from the girl to her parents.

I'm absolutely certain I did! It was, I think, AQA board. Might be wrong on that though.

Did anyone else do this exam? Tell me I didn't imagine it!

I did mine in 1992 and English was 100% coursework.

She’s Leaving Home was one of the pieces we studied.

I remember this. Or at least I do now you’ve prompted. I’m a bit earlier than you though.

I also recall that Earl Spencer’s funeral speech was used in my A Level English Language around the same time. We had to do textual analysis on it.

How on earth do you remember these things?? I can’t even remember to pick my kids up from school 🤣

Ugzbugz · 05/11/2019 22:03

Mine was 97 and have zero recollection of that! I got a D though and didnt give a shit Confused

alliejay81 · 05/11/2019 22:05

I did mine in 1997. Remember this exam paper, but like others think it was my mock paper. I seem to remember having to write something about snow for the actual exam.

I bombed it - so you should know better than me! I got a C when predicted an A. Haunted me for a while: I got accused of getting someone else to write my UCAS personal statement for me. They alleged the standard was too high for someone with as C in English. Thankfully they gave me a place and more I have a maths degree and avoid writing Grin.

Is it about the short story ‘Your Shoes’ by Michelle Roberts? The mother is the narrator and talking about her daughter leaving home? It was part of the AQA short story anthology.

MistyMinge2 · 05/11/2019 22:15

I did my gcse's that year and can't recall at all. I'm amazed you remember.

LittleAndOften · 05/11/2019 22:39

@alliejay81 same here - predicted A* (I think it must have been one of the first years for that grade) got Bs. It also must have been when they started to reduce coursework weighting because my brother is 2 1/2 years older than me and his was most, if not all, coursework. I was gutted because it was supposed to be my best subject! I still think it was down to poor teaching because as a year group we were all marked lower than predicted. I redeemed myself though, with an A at A Level, did English at uni and became an English teacher!

I'm not bitter about my GCSE grade (much) , honest Hmm

dear Lord sat mine in 1984 I feel old

ImportantWater · 05/11/2019 22:43

Did GCSEs in early 90s and it was all coursework - but I do remember in the third year , now year 9, we were played She’s Leaving Home and had to write a story about it. I always thought it was the teacher’s idea but obviously not! My story had the girl come back because she felt sorry for her parents (adoptive parents in this story) only to be mown down by a car as she was crossing the road to the front door. Drama!

We just had as a task to do in class, to write alternative lyrics to that song or something. So it sounds like English teachers were fond of it. I believe you. :)

SubstantialDroop · 05/11/2019 22:54

I'm amazed so many people remember their gcse questions lol. I did mine in the 00s and I don't think I remember a single question 😂

Kanga83 · 05/11/2019 23:03

I did in 95 but couldn't tell you if it was mock or exam.
