To find the term "girl boss" horribly patronising

I'm seeing this phrase (along with lady boss) crop up more and more recently.

My objections are firstly that I'm a woman, not a girl, thank you very much - as are all the women I've seen "girl boss" used in reference to.

Secondly, a man is never a "boy boss" or a "man boss" - he's just "the boss". Why does the female equivalent need a qualifier in front of it?

Thirdly, the whole phrase just has an offensive ring to it - as if a woman is doing a man's job. The word actress seems to be used far less these days and yet we're happy to use the term girl boss?

I'm sure it never used to be a thing - where has it come from and AIBU to hate it?

Yes, I saw that advert this morning and it was so partronising. Something like you do your girl boss thing and we'll do the proper work Hmm

helpfulperson · 05/11/2019 17:19

Interestingly boss lady is, i think, different because there is a male equivalent. I would refer to my boss as the boss man. But girl boss is horrendous.

Interesting! I've never heard the phrase "boss man" before. I would just say "my boss".

I’ve just seen this on the tube too. It occurred to me to take a black Sharpie to the “girl” bit but was too much of a scaredy.

I’ve no idea what it was advertising, so pants advert all round.

nocluewhattodoo · 05/11/2019 17:41

It's all over social media, lots of charlatans selling online 'empowerment courses' to help you be a boss bitch/girl boss/boss lady/boss babe. It's grim especially when it's claiming this language is some sort of feminist empowerment when all it does in reinforce the idea that women are not natural bosses

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 05/11/2019 17:43

I find that the people who refer to themselves as girl bosses tend not to be actual bosses.

BritishHorrorStory · 05/11/2019 17:55

I've never heard this or seen it being used. I would automatically think it's a young 20 something trying to be clever.

Lady Boss = 🤮 You're my boss, you pay me, yes, you're a lady, your sex doesn't matter, I still probably hate you.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 05/11/2019 17:59

I hate it when women call themselves ‘girls’ full stop, whether there’s a boss attached or not. Girls are early 20s at most. Using it for adult women just sounds daft.

BigFatLiar · 05/11/2019 18:02

There’s a special place in hell for whichever misogynist twat coined that term

What makes you think it was a male term, sounds more like the sort of term someone trying to be trendy would use.

SummerPavillion · 05/11/2019 18:09

This boils my girl piss

SummerPavillion · 05/11/2019 18:10

Sorry that's revolting

gebruikersnaam · 05/11/2019 18:50

I only ever see it used by MLM #bossbabes

Same here. Them, or Instagram 'influencers'.

june2007 · 05/11/2019 18:55

Never come across it, because although I have worked in different roles I mostly work in childcare which is female dominated anyway.

LellyMcKelly · 05/11/2019 19:03

Mumpreneur makes my anal sphincter contract. You never hear of dadpreneurs.

FemaleEcho · 05/11/2019 19:18

I see it all the time on mlm/pyramid scheme posts.

"Be a girl boss and earn seven ways from your phone"

"Ask me how I became a boss babe and made three figures from my phone before even waking up"

gebruikersnaam · 05/11/2019 19:19

Same here. Them, or Instagram 'influencers'.

Self-proclaimed motivational speakers and life coaches as well.

thisnamechanger · 05/11/2019 19:22

I’ve only seen it used by young women to refer to themselves

Same. And they're usually pretending to be some big-shot businesswoman when in fact they're a freelancer with about 30 followers.

LolaSmiles · 05/11/2019 19:22

I've also only ever seen it used by MLM bots who are #BossBabes #LivingMyBestLife , usually with photos of their mug talking about how they have the best office.

The tragic thing is that everyone I know who says they're a #GirlBoss are not at all the boss because they're being nagged by their bot controllers at MLM Hun HQ

Dcle · 05/11/2019 19:24

Could not agree more. Have lost a couple of really decent friends because they became mlm bossbabes and I can't take them seriously anymore. They are actually intelligent people, how they get sucked in is beyond me

Not all misogynists are male.

littlehappyhippo · 05/11/2019 19:53

@lllllllllll I never hear anyone saying this. Ever.

ForalltheSaints · 05/11/2019 20:09

You are a girl at school, a woman once you leave school (or perhaps earlier).

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 05/11/2019 20:15

Not used in the actual business world thank fuck, it screams MLM to me
