To ask can red wine make your poo dark 2 days later?

Namechanged, not the damn poo troll.

I'm going through a bit of a difficult patch at the moment with medical stuff (unrelated to bowel issues) and it's making me a tad anxious and prone to worry about everything.

I've always known that if you have black tarry poo that's a big warning sign to get to the doctor, and I don't have that, but I did have a very dark bowel motion. I had half a bottle of red wine on Sunday, could that be it? I can't even remember if I went to the loo yesterday tbh.

I have so much involvement with doctors at the moment I cannot face asking this at my next appointment. But because things are hard at the moment I'm already thinking fuck me what if I've got bowel cancer.

Is the wine the likely cause?

Not a drinker so can’t say if the wine would cause it. But I have a medical career, and would say dark bowel movements can be a concern. Are you on iron tablets? As this would cause it too. If you see any red/ blood get it checked straight away (from either end). And if it’s not tarry you will prob be okay obviously motions can vary in colour. But if this is something you’ve never seen before you could at least check with 111 (they do it online again now too).

Also to add, I doubt it’s cancer: but depending on how regularly you drink etc and how much you had recently it could mean a bleed somewhere in the gastro intestinal area.

Yes I had wine on sun and its still dark

theemmadilemma · 05/11/2019 15:57

Yup red wine, dark poo.

Yep, it’s the wine. Tannins cause it, usually a 24-36 hour lag for me

Agree that red wine can still be having an effect 2 days later. I had a couple of glasses on Sunday night and definitely dark this morning!

Livebythecoast · 05/11/2019 16:25

Yes it can, the same with beetroot and cranberries I find. Just keep an eye on it if it continues for too long

Thanks all, I'll relax about it for now and keep an eye.

Try not to worry, if this hasn't happened before and as you know you've definitely had wine I'd put it down to the wine. I know I definitely have that effect the day after when I've drunk red wine and it's important to remember that food is digested and moves through our bowels at different rates.

Something you ate two days ago could take longer to work it's way through your colon than something more easily digested that you ate yesterday, hopefully that makes sense. So there's a good chance that the bowel movement you had today contained food that has been working through your digestive system for over 24 hours and therefore picked up the red wine coloring.

Definitely red wine, has the same effect on me!
