To take a sick day?

catlover564 · 05/11/2019 08:14

I haven't had a sick day in over 5 years. My manager will pay everyone up to 3 sick days a year. Every other member of staff have sick days even when I know they aren't genuinely sick. Should I have a sick day? Am I missing a trick? The only reason I haven't is not wanting to ruin my track record

You don't take a sick day. You have time off when you are ill if you need it.

Wakemeuuuup · 05/11/2019 08:15

If you are too sick to go to work , take a sick day. If not, don't

CheekyFuckersDontGetPastMe · 05/11/2019 08:17

You aren’t missing a trick

Calic0 · 05/11/2019 08:20

People who take the piss are the reason why employers go on to introduce draconian and punitive attendance management measures which impact on people with actual health issues.

If you’re sick, don’t go to work. If you’re not, do.

GeneHuntLover · 05/11/2019 08:21

So you want a sick day because others get them, even though you're not sick?

flowery · 05/11/2019 08:22

Do you need a flowchart? Are you too ill to work? If yes, take a sick day. If no, go to work.

Spied · 05/11/2019 08:26

I'd be tempted.
Have a 'you' day at home. Self-care.
It may improve your well-being and enhance your productivity at work.Grin

Anotherlongdrive · 05/11/2019 08:27

Really? You want to take a sick day because you feel you are missing out?

No wonder alot of employers dont offer good suck benefits. People just take the piss.

PurpleDaisies · 05/11/2019 08:30

If you’re sick, take a sick day.

If not, don’t.

Elodie2019 · 05/11/2019 08:30

My SIL works for a big company covers for her colleagues when they are sick, have leave of abs. Jury service or are on holiday.
It doubles her work and she has to stay late evenings and catch up at the weekend to fit it all in. No extra pay.
Her colleagues absence is never covered in any other way.
She takes paid days off sick without fail. Sick or not. I don't blame her. They treat her like dirt.

Ilovetolurk · 05/11/2019 08:31

I have a friend who used to take 'mental health' days and was very vocal about it.
She was made redundant.

As you were...

flowery · 05/11/2019 08:40

I used to work with someone who counted their ‘entitlement’ to paid sick days like holiday. She’d plan ahead in her diary when she was going to take them, same as her annual leave.

goodwinter · 05/11/2019 08:42

You are lucky to be healthy overall.

goodwinter · 05/11/2019 08:42

What I mean is, don't feel cheated. It's a good thing you don't need sick days.

Applesanbananas · 05/11/2019 08:43

Yanbu, after 5 years I think you are entitled to take a sick day even if you don't need it. I dont rhink people are going to assume you are taking the piss for one day out of 5years.

Wattagoose90 · 05/11/2019 08:46

People who call in sick with a cold or minor illnesses take advantage on my opinion. Sick days are for when you're physically unable to fulfil your duties due to being unwell.

If you feel like others are abusing this and it's affecting morale, have a word with your superiors but I wouldn't be inclined to follow suit. If you think less of them because of it, everyone else will too.

DrVonPatak · 05/11/2019 08:46

I can totally sympathize in this time of the year and weather like this, but it WOULD be morally wrong, despite what "other kids do". If it's any comfort, Christmas will be round soon.

CalamityJune · 05/11/2019 08:50

I dated a man once who took these paid sick days as additional holiday allowance. I think it's a crap attitude to have really and I agree that it makes employers less understanding with everyone, when a minority take the piss.

Sistercharlie · 05/11/2019 08:53

I think YWBBU to take a sick day when you are not ill (a) because you never know when you might need genuine sick leave in future and (b) your attendance record will be taken in to account when promotions, reorganisations and even redundancies are being considered.

Smilebehappy123 · 05/11/2019 08:55

I absoloutley would and call it a mental health day, do two consecutive days though it's more convincing , put your feet up and relax knowing that you are being paid
I work for a company thay following 5 years of employment that you actually qualify for 6 months sick pay (full pay ) the amount of people that go off for multiple weeks is astounding
Feet up enjoy x

SoupDragon · 05/11/2019 08:56

Sure, lie to your employer. Why not?

Smilebehappy123 · 05/11/2019 08:57

Its laughable all these people with a deep sense of moral obligation to an employer that would replace them in a week if they dropped dead
OP enjoy your days off x

Greenglassteacup · 05/11/2019 08:59

Are you sick?

Anotherlongdrive · 05/11/2019 09:57

What's that got to do with it? OP isnt sick. Most people will drop their job without a second thought if something better came along or the business was closing.

Of course a business would replace people. Why would they employ you, if they didnt need someone doing that job.

Replacing someone who has died doesnt mean people dont give a ahit about the person.

Besides, which lying to you employer is ok, because they would replace you. What of OP actually gets ill and has used her paid sick days?
